Loose Trannie Mount?

Hello everyone,

I changed my trannie fluid today and while I was under there I performed the obligatory visual inspection. When I looked at the transmission mounts, I saw a space above the rubber bushing (photos are below). My immediate reaction is that these are loose, or the bushings are shrunken? I could not loosen or tighten the bolts with hand tools, and I did not want to get out the impact wrench until I had a second opinion. Do they need new bushings? Just need tightened up?

Thanks for any input.

The space looks fine but what does the rubber itself look like? If it is cracked then you have an excuse to upgrade to the sport mounts.(hehehehe)
If not, don't worry about them.

Thanks, Wayne. The rubber looks fine, so I will let them go until I have a reason to pull the transmision. When that happens, sport mounts are a distinct possibility!

I'm looking at the same upgrade. Are the bolts that tight?. I thought mine were bad, but they look the same as yours. What is so hard to remove them with hand tools? Thanks for any reply. Is this a job that can be done at home, or should I take it to my wrench with a lift?

For a little more info on this topic, and a few more pics, scroll down almost half-way on this page and see where I had a similar experience.

Long story short....as Wayne said, if the rubber is fine, flexible without cracks, you should be okay.

rcecale,

Thanks for the link...jeez, what a can of worms you had. I know that the PO had the clutch done about a year before I bought the car, so it looks like the shop that did it screwed it up.

The next time I put the car up I will pull the bolts and run a tap through the threads and see if that works.

hi guys,
I have see many people on this board talking/wanting sport mount. I use to have eurethane mount on other made cars but driving an old 911, even rubber stock mount is killing my butt already. The car is orginally harsh enough. Why would yuo want a harder mount? Any advantage that I don't know yet? Please input.
Thanks.

The way I understand it, the firmer the mount, the better the shifting. I guess it has something to do with maintaining engine/transmission position in relationship with the linkage. Just my $.02.

I would not expect a urethane transmission mount to significantly affect ride quality, maybe just transfer a little more noise into the cabin. My 87 rides on rubber suspension bushings and is a quite comfortable, not harsh, ride.

If the transmission mounts are worn, the same goes for the motor mounts.
As a short-term solution you can remove the mounts one at a time and grind the center metal sleeve/bushing down about 1/4".
Support the transmission with a small floor jack, remove the bolt, lower the jack a little to get the mount out, grind 1/4" off the center bushing, re-install using anti-seize on the bolt.
I did all 4 mounts 2 years ago. It'll buy some time until I install the sport mounts.
