a quick stupid question ;)

hey all...I'm wondering what the condenser/cooler in the front the car is... a mechanic told me its the A/C condenser, but I thought that is attached to the engine lid? Could it be the oil cooler up front then?

nevertheless, the fan right above it which is accessible thru the front trunk lid is all cracked up and doesn't turn on....

its an 85 targa...

thanks
david

David,
The radiator looking thing up front and center is one of the AC condensers. Its job is to cool the refrigerant to return it to a liquid after it has absorbed the heat from the air. The radiator in the engine lid is the other AC condenser. They work together.
The evaporator is what cools the air. Liquid refrigerant is metered in and the heat of the air passing over it turns the liquid to a gas.
The compressor sucks up the gas and pressurizes it and sends it to the condensers where the gas is returned to a liquid state.
In the condensers the refrigerant can be 200 lbs. or higher. That is why it is called the high side. Usually quite warm when working.
Hey I'm not a real AC guy, but I have studied AC and been responsible for monitoring systems.
Probably more than you asked for.
