How much for a 911SC paint job?

Can somebody give me an idea of the typical cost for a minimal (non-show)exterior paint job on a 911SC, with factory paint, assuming just minor scratches and dings (no filling; minor sanding, no disassembly). These cars do get to a point where a coat or so of paint would improve things greatly, if only for protective purposes. Would such a paint job, assuming original color/paint, detract from the car's value?

Some people make a big deal about original paint but IMO a nice paint job over old/tired original paint will increase the car's value.

I think you are looking at $3K minimum for a minimally acceptable quality paint job.

Ive seen it for $2500 few years back. But realistically it depends on how much you are willing to pay for R&R of the little parts/ When they are all removed and carefully reinstalled the car can be like new. But , no it will not add to the value of the car per se, to a buyer. Original color/paint is best when reselling.

Why are you looking to paint it? What color is it. So long as the paint is not broken minor dings can be repaired without painting, and the so long as not oxidized the paint may be polished. What color is it (some are easily buffed/spot painted).

If you do go full repaint make sure they specialize (actually paint 911s) in Porsche.

It is expensive for quality work and it is worth it.

Good luck.

You mean not repainted is best when reselling?

Color is "schwarzmetallic" --which is a dark gray.

Based on your given conditions the biggest factor is where you live. If you live in or near a major metro area, bet on much higher labor costs.

With 911 body's there are almost no flat surfaces. Most everything is a compund curve + the fact that body gaskets are used between every attaching panel = labor intensive.

Actual painting is only about 10% of the work involved. The paint finish should at least equal what was on the car originaly. I'm in the Northern Va area; close to DC. Labor rates are high here. I'd expect price for same color paint job in the $5K range

Do yo mean factory color or factory paint. The actual German paint is very expensive. Dupont or PPG or most other paint companies make the same factory colors. You can count on the factory German supplied paint to be at least twice the amount of a domestic paint.
If your spending over 4K on the job the extra couple of hundred to by German paint might be worth it to you.
I've painted three Porsche's and used the German paint on the last. It has held up fabulously and looks as good as new, of course my car is garaged, never see's rain (So Cal) and is well taken care of

I am in the same boat with a 83 SC. I live in Ventura county, CA. I have 5K for a respray of original color. Nobody wants my money. Everyone I go to says 10K to start. I bought it in 01 for 10.5K. Any Pelican's know of a shop that will work with you. I have a Porsche and a budget?

Hey Billder I know a great shop that will do it for $5k or less. They just did one side of mine and it came out beautiful for $1200 + new rubber. Its called Elite Auto in La Mesa, CA which is right outside San Diego. Call 619-667-3788 and ask for Adrian. Tell him Justin sent you and they give PCA or BMWCCA discounts.

I used a great little shop in San Marcos, in north San Diego county (a bit nearer to you). Was recommended to me by my mech. - has painted many Porsches and his work's been in numerous car mags (has an air cooled 911 himself) - same guy, same shop for 18 years. Pm me & I'll tell you more. The quality is great and the price is really really right considering he removes what ought to be removed before prepping and is very particular -just count on leaving your car with him for four weeks or so.

Wow! 10k for a paint job on a small car? those guys are on crack!
Geez, it's only paint. I know the glasurit paint jobs can run pretty hefty because they have a step system but that is simply price gouging.

At least some of you have shops that will do it! I thought about having mine sprayed due my lack of time lately to do it myself. I called three reputable shops in the area and not one of them would touch it. They were great until they found out it was a 911. They want no part of it.

So, it is still in the shop, patiently waiting.

Just take it to MAACO for $800. If you do the masking tape yourself it'll be even cheaper. I would stand there and watch the monkeys spray however.

As far as resale value....guys spend $4,000-8,000 on paint jobs on cars that are only worth maybe $10,000-$12,000. Before and after...maybe or less...

MAACO for $800? Now you're talking. I'd like to see the finished product first, though. Any experiences out there?

At $10-12K, you can probably put a few $K into these cars and get it back--depending on the mileage. You won't get $8-10K back unless the mileage is 50K or less. But that doesn't matter, I suppose, if you love your car and want to be buried in it.

The 911 is a slight pain to paint because of the shape but, these 10k paint jobs are just the shop trying to get rid of what they are scared will be a picky customer. If you prep the car and remove all the rubber trim it shouldnt be any more than painting a regular size car. If you start talking about how perfect you want it then the shop will try and blow you out the door with the price. Then if you still want it they can afford to redo little things as often as you want!
Where are you located? You have a color that should be base/cleared to look right. The $800 maaco job is the top line single stage in acrylic. It think even maaco wants about $2k to base/clear it. Any one you use (especially discount) will need to have finished examples around for you to inspect. There is a place downt town here that will shoot it for around $1500 base clear if you prep it. It's a good mom and pop shop. Thats what you need to find.
Good luck

body & paint

I've always thought body shops were a bit steep on their pricing especially when it comes to painting vehicles like Porsche and others. I understand first hand the amount of hard work that goes into the body work and painting process having just done it, but pricing in the 8-9K is ridiculous. I've asked body shops why the special pricing.....I've been told that this was because Porsche owners were meticulous with their cars and demand perfection. Never mind that as soon as you put the car on the road it'll be riddled with stone/ sand chips. I just painted a 1970T with a PPG product. The color was a 2005 Carrera GT silver code and it looks just fine. I did the work myself in my garage and one of the most rewarding aspects is knowing that I did this myself. I'm in Lake Elsinore...just across the Ortega if anyone want to take a look. I can help you get an idea of what it'll take, or take on the job for you at a fair price.

I had my car painted a few years ago. This shop does a great deal of work on 356's doing rotisserie frame-ups to track mishap repairs.

The front of the car was littered with rock chips, no dents and a front fender with a 1" key scratch. The top of the hood was stripped chemically because of the number of rock chips to even the surface for new paint. The factory paint was solid and we wanted to maintain the factory galvanize so I decided to do a scuff (wet sand the original paint to an even substrate) and paint instead of a more expensive total strip and paint.

I took the car body apart, bumpers, valances and lights. The glass guys pulled the front/rear glass. Jambs were in great shape so the new paint was cut there. The car was repainted and the shop reassembled my car with new rubber, tail light lenses and seals along with a new windshield. Total cost of about $9k.

The cost of the paint supplies pale in comparison to the cost of proper preparation of the body panels. The best paint job applied by the most skilled painter will look like junk if what it's applied over isn't close to perfect. You'll end up seeing "through" the paint at the sanding scratches and other imperfections.

When you look around various shops look at some of their complete paint jobs under fluorescent lighting, and save your money until you can take it to the shop that you select.

I forgot, my car got 2 coats of primer, four coats of base and five coats of clear. Color sanded 1500/2000 and buffed out with 3M Perfection III before I took it home. I didn't care for the factory "European Roll" so my car was done almost dead flat.
