New to the forum

I just got my first Porsche. It's an 85 Carrera. It took about a year to find but it was the one I was looking for. PPI was good condition. Leak down was 0 to 1% Miles are 86k. Over all I think it's been well cared for. However the oil leak it a bit anoying. So the return tubes are the guilty party. Vale cover were leaking a little but a little snugging up of the cover nuts cleared that up. I'm quite handy and went over the article on the oil tube replacement. Is it fairly easy? Do I replace all of them, or just the ones that are leaking? The car is to low for my floor jack to reach under. I've heard of people jacking from the engine. Any help here would be great.

Replace all four of them. You can jack up the engine by jacking up on the bottom seam. Use some type of padding like folded up newspaper. I would also recommend getting the jack pad for jacking up from the side. Do a search for "oil tube" and "replace" and you should get a number of good thread. BUT, before you do any of this purchase Wayne's (Owner of Pelican) book "101 Projects for Your Porsche" and the Bentley Manual for the Carrera. You can get both of them here. the 101 manual will guide you through most of the tasks you will have to perform on your car.

I disagree. Replace only those oil return tubes that are leaking, otherwise you could create more of a headache than you anticipated.
If it aint broke, dont fix it.

As for jacking under you car and limited clearance:

Drive up onto some 2x4s under each rear wheel. that should give you enough clearance. that's what I do.

Otherwise get the jack pad for the side jack points.

Pics are mandatory when a new car is purchased

Get a jack pad! Use silicone grease on the return tube o-rings, not oil like Wayne says in his book. The oil gets squeeged off. The tubes should slide in and out with two fingers before you put them in. Putting some hose clamps on the tubes helps when shoving them in, but all in all its just grunt work. You may have to take off your heat exchangers, especially on the driver side.

it depends. if you plan on dropping the exhaust to ease up access, you would be a fool not to change all the oil return tubes. without the exhaust in the way, you can practically toss them on. it is that easy. use silicone grease as mentioned and they slide on super easy. if you want to attack just the offending tube (with exhaust intact), you may have to remove the other one just to get to the leaky one.

hurry, the bay area pelicans annual oyster run is in the planning stages. you dont want to miss it

Good choice - 85 Carreras are the shiznit! I'll parrot the common advice you'll get here: buy Wayne's 101 projects book as a starter reference, post some pics of your car and experiment with the 'search' function on the BBS. There is more 911 information on this site than anyone can use and some of the regulars you'll meet here know more about these cars than Ferdinand, Ferry and Butzi put together.

Welcome to the Porsche 911 community! Now go drive the hell out of it.

Joe

Welcome and congrats on buying into the Legend ! And for finding this forum which is without competition the best source of information on the web regarding vintage Porsche.

And I will echo what Joe said - the 85 Carrera represents the pinnacle of that era.

Don't take him too seriously about the pics, it's a standing optional tradition that you show us your car.

Welcome.
