Question targa top repairs

I am getting to the final stages of putting my turbo back together . the Taga top is missing the front fixing bolts, those are the two alignment pins that go in the front of the top and point downward to align the fron of the top. I have purchased new pins upon installation I realised why the old ones were gone the square nuts are stripped!!! SO i got new square nuts, but I cannot figure out how to remove them without tearing up the whole top. The manual is no help it just tells how to remove the top not how to dissasemble and repair. Can anyone help me out here?

Yes, you will need to pull some material to get at the backside - there is just no other way around this operation.

Beautiful car - how is the top? Any fold "flare" at the fold points, or otherwise find that the front bead is not settled in and behind the lip of the windshield surround? If so, you might consider a rebuild.

But otherwise, you will need some upholstery glue (3M is ideal - red and white tube) and possibly some rivet work.

Check my post of 11/13/01. Truly, there is nothing new under the sun (Targa owners know this!).

ok thanks the top is in otherwise good condition just the pin holes stripped out. and of course they are an odd size even for metric so i couldnt find a tap the correct size to retap the holes.

ok so how do I get at the nuts? without tearing the top it's sewn down?do the side seals need to be unscrewed?

Do a search for Pelican "carsinc". He specializes in re-building Targa tops and has provided loads of info about them on this BBS.

Targa Top Repair

When you find out let me know. I have the same problem withone of my pins and was hesitant to tear into the top to replace.

You're not tearing into the threading, you just need to carefully pull back what has been glued down to the top.

And of course you have to unscrew the side rubber, the side metal gutter, etc. All the hardware has to come off first to get at the material.

If you have any qualms about this do hand this to a pro. Or, if you have the $$, have DanP do the work. I hear the tops come back better than new and zero noise (depending on how well you adjust everything of course!).

Just called and talked to him depends on which year top you have i guess mine is an 88 so the whole thing needs dismantled, but he did give me the correct tap size so will try retapping the holes again before ripping into things

When you do get the pins in place be sure to 1) put a bit of silicone grease or similar on each pin to ease them into the hole and 2) leave the pins a bit loose so they can "find" their sweet spot in the hole - then pull off the top and tighten them up.

That is, if you were to simply tighten them down without pre-centering them they may not be in the ideal spot, central to the holes.
