71 steering wheel wobble?

Is the dealer the only place I can get the bushing for my 71 steering column?

The bushings are available at Pelican. If you can't find them in the catalog, just call.

I believe these only work for 74-89 and not the early 911's.

Your slop exists because the bearing races have been worn by the individual ball bearings that are made of much harder steel. The plastic bushing will not work for you. I had the same problem and solved it at Home Depot. Since the early car steering shaft bearing is a simple loose ball type like you would find in a bicycle wheel hub, I reasoned why not find some ball bearings that were just slightly oversized from the original by a few thousandths to replace the original balls.

The window/door hardware section at Home Depot provided the perfect solution for about 10 dollars. That includes trial and error purchasing parts that did not fit: Screen door nylon slider wheels. Buy them and pop them open to release the balls. Compare them to your originals. If you have calipers great, otherwise trial and error.

Simply compile groups of different size bearings and try them.

My 72 steering wheel had a quarter inch of slop and is now perfect!
