Production Number (aka kneepad number) decoding?

I know that the production number behind the right side kneepad is not directly related to the VIN, and I was wondering if anyone has any leads on how to determine if the production number and VIN are in agreement. As far as I know, the only way to determine this is to directly contact Porsche.

TIA

I beleive Dr. Konradshiem actually obtained Porsche's 'list' while researching his book. He is the keeper of the holy grail now from what I understand.

I found in this forum somewhere
Quote:

Yes, this is the commonly called the production #.
• The '1' is for 911.
• The '0' is for coupe ( '1' would be for a Targa and '2' would be for a Karmann coupe which was not used in '73).
• The '3' is for 1973.
• The # 5XXX is the sequential # of the body shell.
