More information on smoking...Carrera that is

Hi,

This morning I did the tune up. Here's a list of new information. Maybe some of you have seen similar and can advise.

The old spark plugs with 12k miles look fine. I had a tech friend look them over. They don't indicate oil burning in the cylinders.

Of 12, only one valve checked was a little tight. The rest didn't need adjustment.

I pulled the engine oil cooler in order to replace a leaking lower seal. The small removable fan shroud section over the oil cooler was much easier to deal with it than the old style. It turns out the cooler isn't that difficult to remove with the motor in the car. as long as you remove a couple pieces of engine tin. I didn't even have to pull the heat exchanger.

The air filter side of the airbox is perfectly clean and dry. The side on downstream (left) of the airflow meter box has oily gunk on the sides. It appears as though oil is coming through one or both of the two breather lines that are connected to the back of the intake boot (the 90 deg rubber elbow).

So, is it possible that for some reason the intake is sucking in small amounts of oil under certain conditions? Maybe the issue is a vacuum problem, bad check valve somewhere in the breather lines from the oil tank?

I'll drive the car and report back. If you have input it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan.

Sounds like you may be overfilling with oil. Aim for in between the 'add' and 'full' marks when adding oil.

I am not sure what car we are talking about here, but keep this in mind - with a bad exhaust valve guide the combustion chamber does not 'see' the oil. The oil can go straight into the exhaust and accumulate there. Once the engine is hot it will smoke but not necessarily from a spark plug burning the oil.
Been down this road several times before.
Good luck -
