Fan Corrosion
What causes this - and whats the best way to clean it up?
My aim is to powdercoat the fan but would like to know if I need a new one or can rescue this one. Tim

Tim,
As long as it is not cracked, it can be cleaned up with a metal friendly media blasting and either powder coated, zinc plated, or maybe even anodized.

Salt or mineral rich air will accelerate corrosion.

Fan clean up
I polished my fan while on the car this weekend. Used WD40 and steel wool to start with. Keep at it until the metal starts to look clean and shiny. If you want to take it further to a mirror like finish, you will have to use fine grit sand paper, cutting wax, and jewelers rouge / fine metal polish. A polished fan will transform your engine bay.

I polished mine with Mother's alum/mag polish, took a long time and was never really 100% perfect, but nice.
One visit to the car wash to clean up a messy banjo oil fitting area and it stained already. One touch of water and poof! Polished: After the carwash: ![]() I should of just painted the sucker silver.
