H-5 headlights
Hi,
My 87 coupe has the factory H-5 headlights. I notice that there are several upgraded bulbs available, but that many sources recommend upgrading to H-4’s. What’s the storey? If I go the upgrade to H-4’s do I replace the entire unit or just the lens/reflector unit? Thanks, ![]() ![]() |

You have to replace the whole unit, the trim rings and the plugs that the lights plug into

Also when using higher wattage bulbe you should activate the headlights w/ a relay, the column switch you save could be yours.

As Will said, do a search & you will be reading for a week.
The basics: Your headlights should be on a relay or relays regardless of what you do. H5s can be cleaned to improve them, but . . . Higher bulbs in H5s will probably melt the socket & wiring. The H4 Upgrade requires completely new headlights but done right will give you all the light you may need. Ian

Keep the H5's and install relays to protect the stalk switch. I swapped out the useless fogs for Hella 450 driving lights which turns night into day.
