Opinions on speaker locations in our cars!!!! I have the answer
Ok Gang,
One day I am thinking how great it would be that when I take the C2 coupe down the P.C.H. on a hot California day, I could actually hear the CD player loud and clear with the sunroof open and all the windows down. I pull my car in to a starbucks parking lot near Broad Beach, and start looking around to see where I could put speakers in to the car with out posting a sign that reads "Steal Me, I have a 10K stereo in me" In other words my objective is the stock look, subtle. I immediately see where I could put 2 8" inch sub-woofers and some nice mid tweets to compliment what I already have in the door. I have spent the last week designing and building these two enclosures and I finally have them done. I am installing then tomorrow and am very excited as I have already heard how my speakers sound and I am incredibly happy. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?? ANY NEED FOR THESE IN THE PORSCHE COMMUNITY?? Thanks Nathan ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

How much does it weigh?
Does it mount where Rod Birch's do? How rigid is it?

Nice job! I need that box so I can hear my radio with my top down. What's the price for a duplicate?

Well its 50% fiberglass, and the rest mdf. Its quite light but I will have an exact weight with and without the subs. I may take a mold of it and sell them if I can complete one a bit quicker than a week. Im not sure where Rod's mount but mine is basically an extension of the back seats and mounts to the floor through the subs location, then you mount the subs. You can not see that I have installed really nice screw terminals on both ends of the box hidden once installed. inside the subs are seperated and the box is completely air tight except through the port holes that currently have no trim ring.
If I get enough feedback I will get to it. PM me for serious inquiries. Thanks Nathan

So what's the resonance frequency of the enclosure / speaker combination you built? What steps did you take to tune the enclosure?

Looks good but are the small holes for tweeters? You will not get much sound from there as highs are directional. I built the same enclosure a few years ago and am happy with the results. Good bass that you can feel. I copied the design from car audio innovations.

I'd suggest 6.5 door speakers w/75w x 2 amp before building a rear sub box.

Yes they are, Again I just have not trimmed those out yet. I am also building something that looks nice for the front doors to house the 6.5 speakers. I want it to blend in to the curves of the pocket and handle nicley than just being a random circle. I calculated and tuned by weighing the correct amount of styro balls mini for the cubic inch needed and filled the box, then blocked off where I need until the balls filled it completely. Good times, lot of work.
But fun, Thanks all Nathan

Ben,
I was looking at that one, and its built well and a great idea. The only problem I had with it and wanted to change for my personal use is the way it molds into the sides of the car and runs down. Silly really but im that type where if Im not 100% happy, I will always give it try myself first before settling. Nathan Keep in mind guys, this is not a sales ploy, I am not even sure if ill make more but its nice to get feedback

Speaking of enclosures, you might want to look at this design. They take the place of the rear quater panels under the side rear seat windows.

Hey guys,
So I just took a few pics. I have it all connected and it sounds amazing. I am a 6 foot 1 inch guy so I wanted to take a pic of the distance between the enclosure and the back of the seat. I have some serious discoloration of some interior pieces which I will surely be resolving now. I also took a couple pics of some goodies I bought today. An aluminum strut tower brace, caliper adapters for the crossed drilled slotted rotors and Brembo brakes, and the wheel adapters 2 inch in the rear and 1 inch for the front. Ill be waking up early tomorrow for these installs. I also included a pic of the wife getting out the groceries from her favorite ride. Thanks Nathan ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It looks interesting....
I still am wondering about the resonance, the size of the encloslure, the "Q" of the response curve, the rigidity and the wt. ... you started the thread with "I have the answers" So...

Creating a ported enclosure this small is very tricky to get right. I think it would have turned out, and definitely sounded much better had you built a sealed enclosure. If your happy with the sound, then that's all that matters, but if your planning on selling them you'll need to correct some problems in the design.

Well since it is ported you can tune it with the port size and depth. Some of us being metal heads (and gearheads

I seem to recall there was a shop in CA that sold/installed audio for Porsche's and already designed a box much like you're doing. I'll look for the link, I know I used to have it bookmarked. Here it is

Rod Birch is in Sacramento. I have his sealed sub unit. I lost the last click of moving the seat backwards which for me is never used anyway. Screw tall passengers. To precisely seal the unit to the tub I used strips of Dynamat to fill up the edges to the tub. I also used 2 hinges on the lower edge to thru bolt it to the lower pan with ss bolts and acorn nuts instead of using machine screws. I also used wedges under the door sub to angle the speaker into the middle and up between driver and passenger heads. My separate tweets are aimed the same.. maybe not the best theoretically but it has the best punch for my act. Pics available.
