76 911 2.7...I had spark but then lost it. It had a Permatronic ign. I put in point thinking I fried the module. CD box hums but still no spark. Is there a way to check the coil? Should the + terminal be hot? It is not. I checked the ground strap and it is in good shape. Thanks for your time Paul

Paul,
Here are some threads with CDI info you may want to read and print out: Perma-tune CD or Bosch CD? Ignition Troubleshooting?????? History of Bosch CDI ... toubleshooting info, parts list changes, and schematics ... I suggest a 'Telegraph Key' test with a grounded new spark plug as the load plugged directly into the coil. Remove the Black and Black/Violet wires from the distributor terminal ... and repeatedly touch to ground and remove ... a spark should be generated each time the Black wire is ungrounded. If the test works, there is a problem with your points. It is wise to carry a spare set of new or known-good points with any Pertronix-equipped distributor, as you will never know when the Pertronix will fail! Is your coil leaking or oozing goo or oil? Thje primary should measure 0.4 - 0.6 Ohms, and the secondary 650 -790 Ohms ... assuming OEM Bosch 0.221.121.001 or 0.221.121.006 coil. Not all digital multimeters can measure accurately below one Ohm ... some will show '0' ... but that does not necessarily mean the primary is shorted! The usual failure mode for a CDI coil is a partly-shorted secondary showing lower than normal resistance. Good luck!

Thanks to all that replied! I found the problem, the rubber in the plug that goes through the distritor had worn and was letting the points ground out to the distribitor. Thanks for all the great information,

Is there any particular reason you have not junked the points system yet and upgraded your igniton system. You would probably be cutting alot of future headaches out of your life if you were to do so.........just asking?

I agree, it had a Permatronic ignition but I fried it somehow. I had point in the garage and decide to use them until I ordered another Permatronic unit.
