Kuhl vent
My A/C works OK, but after some reading I checked my "bow tie" under the dash and saw that it had a plug in the round pipe. As an experiment I removed the bow tie and plug, and lots of air rushed out of the hole and into the cabin, BUT, the volume of air coming out of the center vents went down a good bit. So, my question is what is the real benefit of another vent, if it just takes air away from the center vents? During my 15 mile drive I felt like the A/C was better with the under dash vent plugged.

The only "benefit" is that the air is directed into the footwells, as you mentioned. Looks like a previous owner preferred it the way you do.
