Need more Targa top advice...
Thanks to everyone for their imput. After everyones' posts I decided to try reupholstering the targa top myself. (or at least try). . . it seems to be within my skill level. I do have a few specific questions though,. . .
First off, where is a good place to buy a vinyl top and head liner? Secondly, does anyone have any suggestions as to what type or brand of glue should be used to attach the top skin to the frame? And finally,Can anyone explain how to install the headliner (in particular, the sections above the windows. . . where do they go?)Most of the (very good) tech articles I have read focused more on the actual top itself. Just wondering. Thanks, Leland Pate ____79 SC Targa ------------------ |

Sorry can't help with the procedure itself but I'm sure other members can...but regarding the parts -- are you kidding? First choice is to call/email Pelican. Remember they can get just about anything even if it isn't listed on the web site (yet).

I am not, as of yet, totally convinced of the reliability/security of ordering ON-line. Call me old fashioned. . .perhaps you are right and maybe I should give them a call. But, I have been told in the past that when looking for things like upholstery to find a place that specializes in Upholstery.
thats why I was asking.I will check pelicans prices though. thanks, Leland ____79 SC Targa [This message has been edited by Leland Pate (edited 02-16-2000).] |

Lee,
The web page I posted about doing the job recommended World Upholstery and Trim ... at 1-800-222-9577. You may want to call them about the 'skin' and new headliner. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I guess I have reservations about World Upholstery and Trim. About five years ago I was restoring my '76 BMW '02 with a kit from them. It may have lasted two years. . . now both front seats have rips along a seam. I dunno, maybe that was just bad luck. . .but it still sticks in my mind.

You might check with Original Fit Interiors in California. The add is in Excellence Magazine. I purchased a carpet kit from them and it was great. I am going to be doing my top this spring and will probably purchase the German Vinly, foam padding and headliner from them. I have not seen anyone beat the price.

Hello everyone,
I did an article on the targa top replacement that is on the Pelican tech area. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_targa_top_recover/911_targa_top_recover.htm You can also check it (and other projects)on my web site http://members.rennlist.com/5150targa Go to Original Fit Interiors for your stuff - they have great prices and everything I got from them fit perfect. This is an easy project and very satisfying. Just remember to get the top as tight as you can - WITH the arms UNFOLDED. Email me if you have any questions. Tom Sharpes 74 911 Targa |

3M has a spray adhesive for installing your top.
As far as the head liner, I did mine with the cross braces in. Lay the headliner on the top and get it centered. Fold back half of it and spray the skin with adhesive. Start from the crease and using your hands, spread the headliner out over the sprayed area. It's pretty easy once you start. Once you get to the ends you will have to do some trimming on both outboard sides, and where the braces are (front and rear) fold them in just enough to spray the adhesive and work the remaining under the braces with a flat rubber spatula or something similar. Hope this helps Regards Steve |

Ok, I think I understand now. The headliner is just glued to to under side of the top.(?)
That makes sense. When I bought the car the headliner was held up by safety pins, and the foam was practically gone, so, I took it out and just glued it in. But it didn't stretch completely into the corners and under the hinges so it looks pretty bad.I guess I'll have to trial an' error it. 3M glue is strong enough? Thanks guys, I can almost smell the money I can save because of all of you. I friggin' love this board. |

Leland, Check out 5150's website at renlist. His website makes it look so easy I might try it once I get through my mechanical repairs.
