engine timing

has anyone found a good timing setting for the 2.7 cis engine. I have installed crane electronic igition. i did not check the timming before in installed it. after starting the engine the timing should be adjusted per the procedure.the timing on the 77 set at 15 deg. atdc. what would be a better setting. the car seems more driveable now but does not have that kick it had before. i was running on points before ,the cds unit was bad,i installed the electronic igition. i realize the timing had a lot to do with polution controls than performance in 1977. any ideas thanks.

There are two basic checks, one at 900 rpm idle with the vacuum hose ATTACHED, where it should be 5 degrees After Top Dead Center (ATDC), and very briefly, with vacuum hose DISCONNECTED at 6000 rpm, where it should not exceed 38 degrees BEFORE Top Dead Center. It sounds like you have the timing way TOO much RETARDED at the present time!
