1984 SC Cold Start Problem
 
I have a 1984 SC that will not start if the temperature is in the low thirties. Around 36 and up it will start, below that and you can crank it all you want and it will not start. I bought the car in Dec 99. Four days later it would not start at all. The problem was the sensor on the flywheel. I don't know if the starting problem existed before the repair or not, it was not cold the four days I had it. Also, when it is cold (above 36) and the car does start it cuts off every time you stop until it warms up. If you start it when it is cold it will idle unless you rev the engine. When you rev the engine it will cut off and will not idle any longer until it warms up.

Honestly, I don't mean to get picky, but you can't have a 1984 SC. Porsche stopped making SC in the Model Year 1983; for 1984 they went to the new engine ignition (DME), intake system, etc. and stopped calling it an SC. I know, I know this is picky, but were you told your car is an SC? I'm not sure why you are calling it such.

As to your starting problem, the answers are different for a CIS system than for a DME system. Which do you really have? For instance, the CSI has all those cold start valves, warm up regulators, etc. because the ignition system was not digital, like the 1984 is. So different things had to be diagnosed for the two different types of systems......Andras

The Porsche I have has the DME system. I had the DME "Brain) checked out and it was OK. Could the problem be the Cylinder Head Tempeature Sensor?

If you had the DME tested at a dealer, I'm sure it was an 'in-car' dynamic test and any bad sensors SHOULD have been faound, but I tend to agree it sounds like the right thing to be checking.
