Airconditioning
I have the opportunity to pick up a complete factory air con unit that has been taken out of a 69E, including the under dash ait vents.
Is it possible to fit this to my 69T and if so could anyone give me some idea as to the degree of difficulty? I would also be interested in the comments of those who have such a unit to find out how effective it is and should I expect a significant drop in power. It struck me that the unit is fairly reasonably priced (even though it is hard to establish a benchmark) even though I am not labouring under any misconceptions as to what the total cost could potentially run to. I would like to think that this upgrade is not a bastardisation of the original, and anyway its a small compromise to make for a happy wife! |

If it is indeed a 'factory' Behr unit, it should not be difficult at all ... perhaps the most difficult part would be all of the engine mounting 'modifications' to fit. The mods are not hard, but a lot of 'trimming' to fit will be required. I assume all of the engine brackets are avilable, too?
You MUST get the special double-sheave pulley that replaces the 'normal' crank pulley for the fan and alternator. Is R-12 still readily available in your sun-scorched vicinity? ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Any suggestions where I could find information on how this unit was originally installed? In particular I am thinking about how and where ducting would run.

I have the original a/c installation manual from the factory for the 1973 series car, which might be of help to you.
I am not sure if they are the same, but Warren might know. Warren, if you are listening... will this manual help out his installation? Thanks in advance for your reply.... Marc Weintraub |

Marc's manual may be for the same unit, as I think the units were all the same up through '73. Funny, but I have both the Vol. 1 & 2 set manuals for the '65-'71, and it has a very sparse supplement for the Air Conditioning, and the Vol. 3-6 set for the '72-'83 cars has nothing in the way of air conditioning supplements, except for the chages made in '74 and later cars, but my set was published in 1976! Between the two of us, Marc and myself, we may have something approaching as complete a reference as exists! And, since I presently have the interior out for recarpeting, I can take some digital pics of the under-dash layout without the interference of the seats!

Guys I would appreciate getting my hands on any of the information you might have and open to any suggestions as to transmission of the same. Warren if you have a chance to snap off some picks and e-mail them it would be great, probably the easiest way of getting my mind around this potential project.
Thanks for the help to date. [This message has been edited by Paul W (edited 02-17-2000).] [This message has been edited by Paul W (edited 02-17-2000).] [This message has been edited by Paul W (edited 02-17-2000).] |

Oddly enough, I had made a copy of the manual, so if you forward your address to me, I will gladly forward it to you.
Thanks Warren, I wasn't too sure about that one. Best Regards, Marc Weintraub |
