A/C Compressor options?
 

hello everybody,

just took my car to the shop to get the A/C charged. when i came back to pick up the car, the mechanic told me that the system was already charged, but the compressor was on it's way out. i could see that the clutch would sieze up periodically, and the air was blowing warm. i took a look at cost of new compressor and quickly realized why the p/o never messed with the issue. i'm thinking of getting it rebuilt, perhaps the most effecient solution. has anyone got reccomendations? either on places that rebuilt them or getting one used?

The Sanden 507 Compressors are quite affordable.

thanks Scott. this looks pretty interesting. but it looks like this is an add on to the current system that aids in bringing the tempreture down, correct?

the pulley on my compressor will periodically lock up and causes the belt to screech like hell. so i'm not sure if i need to get that fixed first and then use the add the RennAire as suggested.

The Sanden compressor (you'll have to forward to the next page of that section to see it) is a replacement for the factory unit.

ah, thanks Scott. so for my 78 930 i would need the RennAire Sanden 507 Compressor Kit, 911 (1965-89) $249 plus the RennAire York to Sanden 507 Adapter Plate, 911 (most up to 1985) $69, correct?
How do these Sandens work in comparison to stock equipment?

Yes - that is correct. According to everything I've read about it, the Sanden compressors work better AND are lighter.

Check with the folks at www.rennaire.com to be sure the fittings on the hoses that formerly went to the York will attach to the Sanden.

You may want to consider replacing your hoses. The stock hoses are designed to leak. The modern hoses are called barrier hoses, and they don't leak. Rennaire sells a very reasonably priced hose kit. You might also consider adding a ProCooler from Rennaire (btw, I'm not affiliated with Rennaire, but am a customer).

A/C upgrades can be a "slippery slope." Once you get started, sometimes it's difficult to stop. The consensus, however, is that the stock system, even with a new compressor, is not adequate. If you want cold air, there are a variety of upgrades you should consider and install.

Do a search. A/C upgrades have been discussed at length here. Search for my name, Jim Sims, Hugh R, and others. All of us, at one time or another, have discussed a/c. Jim Sims is the resident guru.

ah, i see that slippery slope, but i understand completely. i did a search and got some very positive feedback on rennaire products. mine is not a daily driver but i'm planning on a trip next week, so as long as the a/c is somewhat cool, it will work for me. thanks for the suggestions.
