Gear Oil Change Procedure

Can anyone explain the trans gear oil change procedure for an '86 Cab (removal of old oil and adding of new) and the best way to make sure all the old oil is removed. Thanks for any help.

There is no special procedure, but take the top plug out first, so that you are sure you are able to get it out before draining all the oil!

To make sure its all out, just wait until it stops draining!

On a 911, you will need a pump to get the new oil in.

Thanks for the advice. How many plugs are there? What type of pump do I need to put the oil back in? I guess I put the oil back into the higher of the two plugs? I've never done this before so I really could use some specifics. Thanks!

Jim,

I changed the oil several years ago. I didn't have a oil pump so I used a a 4+ ft section of PVC pipe that led to the oil filler plug. I squirted the oil through the pipe and it worked with a minimum of leakage.

The 'pump' for changing gear oil is commonly called an 'Oil Suction Gun' and should be available in stock or by special order, at any larger automotive parts store. I recommend them for every 911 owner that does his/her own work. The gear oil needs to be changed at least anually. Your transaxle should be warmed up to normal operating temperature before draining the old oil.
