77 911 Oil temp question?????

I did a search on this question. I just got a 77 911 that has been sitting for 5 years I got it running this evening what temp do these 2.7 run? my 65 never runs over 210

Iam going to put 11 blade fan on tomorrow so it still has the 5 blade the gauge was creeping a little over 210 is this normal?

The whole country is having a heat wave, it's at or slightly above normal.

Were you driving real hard?

Check the timing, I lowered my temps about 30 degrees with a proper tune up. Still have to adjust the valves though. Gas milage should be a dead give away.

Also running too lean will run you hot.

Thermal reactors still on?

Note: Running synthetic (don't do it - will leak) will lower temps. Also running lower octane gas may lower temps in my experience (only tried that once).

I just got the engine in tonight and running while I had it out I removed the EGR the thermo reactors (no smog testing here) I was just wanting to get a ball park of were it is supposed to run I drove it around the block a couple of times and it was around 220

I don't want to alarm you, but did you hear whistling noises while reving the engine? I've read that pulled head studs allow air in at the wrong spot at the wrong time causing a temp rise.

220 sounds hot to me if you were not beating it like a dog, heat wave or no heat wave.

I'd check the timing and fuel air mixture first.

Could also be a nest on the engine plugging the air flow, may see this when removing the fan/alternator.

Do you have a front oil cooler ? I had my 77 out last weekend and with the heat wave I was running around 190 . When the temps and humidity return to normal I'll be running 170-175 . Hope this helps .

For reference, I have thermal reactors, five blade fan and stock trombone loop in the front wheel well, and I think 220 is too hot.

I recently went out in the hot weather rode for hours pretty hard and just touched 210 for a slight moment. I could not keep it there if I tried (190-200 avg in heat wave).

On the plus side my odometer read at 2/3rds of a tank more milage than what I was getting from a full tank. My trick was to gap slightly more than .028 inches, had to do this because I was running rich. The running rich may be another problem short term fixed by the extra gap, but I'm chasing that other problem down, lots of CIS searches.

yeah it has the stock oil cooler (engine) and the trombone cooler I had it idling for about 30 mins is anther possible reason for the warm temps?

They say that you should not let a 911 engine just idle, it's bad for it. I think this has more to do with heat build up than running rich and fouling plugs, but I could be wrong. It could be both reasons combined.

I often let the car heat up for slightly less than five minutes, getting it above 80, but well below 170.

If I leave the house with temps over 170, the entire run that day will be 5-10 degrees higher than leaving the house cold.

For some reason I want to tell you to look under your distributor cap for trapped moisture collecting at the top. If moisture has gotten in there, it can convince you to do an extended warm up as it will run like crap when cold.

People are going to line up to take a shot at me one this..oh well.

I recently re-indexed my distributor, did the timing, changed the rotor, the cap, put in new NKG's at the recomended .028 inches. She was running so rich at idle that my wife said it was buring her eyes. So I messed with the CIS fuel air mixture, but idle was still rich and a new problem of fart like backfires when I left off the gas started to happen. To top this all off, my gas milage still really sucked, but I did have more accessible power than ever before, right off the line was not too bad, much better than it ever had been.

I took the plugs out, they only had a few hundred miles on them - if that, and were already crusty with carbon on the lower base ring, a little whitish on the hook top (holding it upsidedown in my hand).

I cleaned off and scraped off the plugs and re-gapped them from .028 inches to .035 inches.

The car now has a 66% improvement in gas mileage, takes off like a bat, does not run rich at idle, does not run lean when pushing it, and those embarasing exhaust farts when I let off the gas are gone for good.

I'm sure I have a bad WUR or one of a dozen other bad parts preventing my CIS system from operating properly and the spark plug gap is a band-aid at best. I may even have to replace my coil in the next couple of years if I leave this generous gap.

I invite everyone to do a search on this topic, I have not done anything new, just a little outside of the accepted norm. AND IT WORKS!

Well the car came with a box of parts and in the box was six new platnium plugs and in the act of getting it started they fouled pretty bad I really dont like or have had any luck with this type of plugs so I will get a set of standard copper or silver plugs tomorrow and see what happens

I don't even know what mine were supposed to look like when new. 6,000 miles on these platnium plugs...........yuk.

EDIT: For what they cost, I'm installing new NKG's every spring or 3,000 miles.

As a data point:

'76 911S, 2.7L no thermal reactors, OE heat exchangers, NO fender oil cooler, air injectors still there but plugged, dinosaur oil 20W50, 100K miles on a rebuild, worn valve guides , 2 in 1 out Dansk muffler, NO AC, 11 blade fan, Turbo valve covers [no OE magnesium ones with thick heat shield coating]

Warm DC metro area driving I see 200-210. Hot and humid 90 degrees plus stop and go I see 220 +/-.

FWIW
