Starter "jammed" then free

My starter "jammed" and the car would not start from work today. So I basically turned it over in gear and freed the starter. The flywheel gear teeth are very good. What gives?

Thanks.

solenoid...the plastic bit around the mounting end gets brittle with age. This is just a guess.

OK, I looked at the used one, and is it the part riding piggy-back? Those experienced, does this problem re-occur?

yes and it's a Bosch part...however difficult to find the last time I checked. I don't even think Pelican has them if I remember correct...but they are available and much less than the complete starter.
