Cold Start Problem '74 w/ CIS
 

The vehicle is very hard to start when it’s cold, unless I turn the key to the on position and wait 5-10 seconds before attempting to start the engine. If I do this it fires right up. I’ve checked the cold start valve –ok, and the thermo-time switch –ok too (thanks Warren). I’m thinking now that perhaps the fuel accumulator is bad, but… Any other thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You may not be waiting long enough for the pressure to build-up, it has to get up to 60-70 psi, and that is what you need to check for 'downstream' of the regulator and accumulator. I would give it a 15-20 second period to pressurize the system, there may not be a problem ... you didn't mention how long the car sits between running sessions.

It get's worse the longer the car sits. If I let it sit overnight, say 12-15 hours, it is a real bear to start unless I leave the key to the "ON" position for 10-15 seconds prior to engaging the starter. This is a "new" problem, used to be that I could just go out in the morning turn the key and it would start right away.
