911s are something special aren't they?
Even when it makes financial sense to sell mine, I just can't make myself part with them.
I've put my SC on the block a few times to buy a cheaper non-Porsche track dog but I always take it off the market before I get too serious about selling it. For the price of my SC, I could've bought a dedicated track car, mod it just the way I want AND buy a car hauler AND pay for several track days. But there's something about driving a 911 that I can't fully describe except that it's special. I've owned many different cars. Most cost WAY more than my SC but no other makes me want to keep driving. How can a car that costs half as much as a new Honda Accord bring so much excitement and satisfaction? |

Agreed 100%.......I say buy a different brand for a cheap track car and keep the 911 as a Sunday driver. That way, you can pamper the 911 and i'll last forever.....
I would never take my 911 to the track. I was a driving instructor on the job and also road raced motorcycles for 6 years. I just appreciate the fine engineering of the 911 to take it out and flog it........Only my 2 cents....

I'm just saying that I've had equipment that would last forever it driven in a caring manner.
Then I've taken stuff to the track and had major issues in just a very short time. Many don't realize the to the toll a track takes on the equipment.....

- a good question -- the rear engine is part of it - the old time quality is part - the flat, boxer engine is part - the simple, elemental nature of the car is part ... then there's the rest of it...

No track flogging for mine either. I even paid once and decided not to do it. Probably because my other fun car blew a trans on the track so now I am totally gun shy and I would totally pissed if something happened to my SC on track.

It's true stuffing it is a possiblity on the track, but you don't have to drive at 10/10s either. Treated as a chance to improve your driving technique and not as a race, I feel that it's a relatively safe adventure. I try to follow the advice taped to my tach which reads "DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID !" and not drive over my head. And as we all know driving on the street is not without it's share of risk also.

I've been on the fence about tracking mine also, car is very clean, but over the past 4 months it's become my daily driver. Nothing like the feeling of the response up the gears at every light. Very reliable too.

I'm in complete agreement - they are really special cars. When I was planning to build a track-dedicated car, I could have taken cheaper (i.e. Miata) or different (i.e. E30 BMW) routes, but I wanted to drive a Porsche on the track. Because they are out of the factory capable, special cars.
I understand not wanting to mess up a car on the track. I sold my beloved '87 not because I didn't want to drive it there (what a blast), but because the necessary safety mods (seats, roll bar) just didn't feel right in that car. However, cars are not museum pieces - they are meant to be driven and enjoyed. And for some of us, pushing the car on track is how we best enjoy them. I was at a PCA autocross yesterday - it's great to see people really enjoying their cars in a 2nd gear environment. If you are at all hesitant about taking your Porsche to the track, I strongly encourage you to take it to a PCA AX. But for a grin that won't go away, do a DE. With a reputable group, you control the risk you want to take, and it's no more taxing on your car than the on-ramp grand prix.

Dumb Question. I know DE has do do with racing, but what does DE actually mean?? And yes, 911s are special!

Financial sense and Porsche 911 do not belong in the same sentence. These cars are just completely beyond description, and you either
GET IT or you don't. I need an additional 25K for a business expansion opportunity and know that that cash is sitting in the garage, BUT..... I am just going to find the money somewhere else, I just CAN'T part with my car ![]() |
