Seattle Area Alternator Rebuilders?

The original alternator in my '78 SC has developed a case of very noisy bearings, and a progressively loosening belt. Still charging OK, though. My thought is that the best option is to try to get the original one rebuilt.
Any suggestions for shops in the Seattle or Tacoma area (generally) that would be a good choice for this? Or is it something that any auto electric shop can handle? TIA -

Call Gerber Motorsports, or Group 2. They can direct you.
Loosening belt doesn't sound good; some extra issues with the pulley and/or shaft.

Alstar auto electirc in Bellevue usually stocks everything you would need. Just take your old one in there and they have a rebuilt exchange program. Great guys too!

Deja Vu all over again!

Good old Acme - I remember them from my hot rodding days with my old Mustang, back when I was going to Blanchet They did good work then - I'll give them a call and see what they can do.

Call Acme first, I forget if the want it in or out of the fan housing. I took mine in the wrong way and they wouldn't touch it......

Just called Acme and they prefer that the alternator be brought in WITHOUT the fan housing, and that overhaul will likely be $80-$150 depending on how bad things are. They don't want to deal with the loose parts, disassembly (and risks of damage), etc. if it comes in mounted to the shroud.

I'll plan to drop it off later this week, and we'll see what happens....

Now that my memory is refreshed, take it out of the housing, but take the pulley, shims and nut with you so they can test it.....

Ahah!

Yes, that would make sense - thanks for the tip, Bob. Would hate to make the ferry trip over to Seattle and not have the parts they need to verify everything is ready to go.

+1 for Alstar in Bellevue.

When I replaced mine, I brougt the old one in, and they gave me a fresh rebuilt one on the spot. I think it was around $175, but everything was rebuilt/replaced not just new brushes & bearings.
It might save you some time, and and extra trip if you are going to have to run back to pick your original one up at a later date.

Wait a minute - if you have a regulator-in-alternator model you may want to hold on to it. My '78 was rebuilt by Acme some years back, but the model of alternator was not the original (Valeo?) and I learned that I did *not* want the external regulator model.

You might want to check into this. The Search function is not working great, but I have a writeup in there on this very subject.

John, not near his meticulous records...
