an overhaul.....engine drop......full interior....etc

i've been putting off tearing into my 911 for a few months, mainly was due to lack of garage space.
but problem solved, a few weeks ago i moved into my new house with a 2 car garage for my 911.
plus i have unlimited room for my fish tanks (a 700-800 gallon tank is in the "design" phase).

today i put it on jackstands and started rolling, seats are out, most of the audio is out, everything is unhooked for the engine/tranny drop (except oil/fuel lines), will be dropping it saturday.

once it's out the tranny will be cleaned up and taken to ed baus for a rebuild, the engine will go onto a borrowed engine stand/yolk (thanks christian ).
i'm not sure how far into the engine i'm going to go.....a full inspection will tell me that later, expect most all oil seals replaced, the use of christians exhaust stud removal tool ("a quiet boom"), valve adjust, and a thorough cleaning....plus more "while you're in there" i'm sure......

plus suspension.....replacing all bushings front/rear, 22/28 t-bars (ron's in hershey looking for them for me), i have bilstien sports for the front, need to buy the rears, caliper rebuilds f/r, a custom front "skidplate" to protect the fuel tank/front pan (going a little lower than normal).......etc....

christian is going to stop by tomorrow to assist with the drop, my first drop so a second set of eyes/hands never hurts

and i forgot to take some pics.....i'll take plenty tomorrow.

tranny was taken to ed today, we pulled it apart for the rebuild......
first gear was missing a bunch of dog teeth, and the sleeve looks like it needs replaced, i'll have more details once it get broken down and evaluated more, but there is no play in the shafts, the diif looks good etc. so nothing catastrophic

here is the one pic i took

pulled the intake manifold off tonite......there is some oil leakage into the runners......looks like valve seals.
i noticed that on pelican there are oversized valve seals available, are they for larger valves? or can something else wear?
here are some pics down the runners.....in the order of cylinder 1-6

Bell,
You're pertty ambitious. Good luck with getting all that done in a month. I've been working on mine for a long time and still have quite a ways to go. I hope things go smoothly for you. Make sure to show us some new pictures.

as long as i don't have to get too far into the engine i should move right along, i went from having a single car garage with a gravel floor to a 2 car with concrete.......it's amazing what can be accomplished when there is space to move around

Bell,

Nice work. In the first pic, is that a rotted hole in your driver side heat exchanger? Nice time for SSI's??

ssi's are out of budget right now, if my tranny didn't need rebuilt i'd have them already
my heat exchangers are a little tired, but the exhaust pipes are solid, i'll be cleaning these up as good as possible once they are separated from the engine.
there are a few pieces of engine tin which need patched/replaced, i'm going to sand it all down and paint.....probably black, but haven't decided if i want it a color yet.

Bell - Sounds ambitious - good luck. I just dropped my 914 motor last week for the first time (my latest project) and have most of it sealed up. It had some major oil leaks. Hoping to reinstall next week. May have to get Graber to assist - he owes me!

Cheers

shoot me an email when you're ready, if i'm avail i'll head up

looks like i need to replace the drivers side rear engine tin, pretty rotted, the 2 bolts which hold it to #3 cylinder are a problem....one snapped and the other is rounded.
also the bolts were wasted where the tin bolts to each other, that's an easy fix though.
there's alot of grim in the cylinder fins.....they'll be getting a thorough cleansing......i need to make some blockoffs to seal the intake ports tomorrow, this will keep crap from falling inside......it's going to be a messy job

mannnnn...........these exhaust studs are a *****!!
they are all pretty much welded to the studs, tried heating them til they were glowing but to no avail......the 12mm nuts i cut off carefully, no big deal, however the barrel allen nuts which get accessed through the heat exchanger holes are a total big pain in the arse. they were rusted enough where it's bigger than 8mm, so i tried grinding down a larger allen to fit tight.....lots of heat.....nothing. won't even break so i can drill them out.
so i move onto cutting them, took about an hour for #1, #4 i'm halfway through.....the 2 middles are broken flush with the he's, i have no idea how to get the rear ones out as my dremel won't fit anywhere near them........

Do you have the engine on a stand? If not, working on the exhaust is alot easier when the motor is flipped upside down on a stand.

How did I miss this thread?

Anyway bell's made some great progress. We drilled and replaced all the exhaust studs. I CNC'd some port block off plates so he could thoroughly clean the engine. The trans is back and looks fantastic. I assume I'll be getting a call soon to help put it back in. (either that or I'll go over and put it back together myself LOL) Oh, I was able to salvage the heat exchangers for him as well, ugly welding but they're solid now.

bell! get your car done already we need to go for a drive!
