checking timing on a Carrera

Since my car has some miles on it (117,000) I would like to check the timing of the car.

I know once its set the computer does the rest, but how do you check it to see if it is set right?

Is there an article or a link someone can direct me too. I tried a search but that isn't going well.

My car is a MFI system.

You can check it with a timing light. Just can't change it.

Oh, I thought it was like a Ford or Chevy, where you can turn the distributor left or right to set the advance or retard it.

So its just goes in one way then I assume?

Oh no, you can screw it up three ways from Sunday. The end of the distributor shaft is a gear. The distributor will go in any number of ways. It will only go in one way correctly and have the engine run.

The distributor gear is not straight (it's helical), so when you drop the distributor into the hole you have to rotate the rotor a little counter clockwise. The gear will rotate the rotor to the number-1 mark.
