Rsr

What flares did the RSR have? are they the same as the turbo? if I want to make an RSR replica, if the rears are turbo what can I use for the front flares as the post 73 wings start higher up dont they? so the flares will be too short?

RSR replica 1973 style? then the turbo front and rear flares are pretty close to the size and shape. Both could be used with 9 and 11 x 15

the area that is the height of the front turn signals on the 73 has to be fabricated so it is filled. Rears are fine as they are

Bill Verburg 08-07-2006 12:25 PM

For the original 2.8RSR same size, 9" front and 11" rear.

The lip contours are different from the 930

There were even larger flares used in subsequent years

Martin:

Nice link...except they ended up with an RS ...and not an RSR, as to the front fender dimensions.... even though the title says RSR (????)

EDIT--- oops....didn't scroll down far enough !!!...sorry ....

Will,

You aparently got the RS part and stopped scrolling.

Next trick is to find out whether Garry at 911 Classic can make me a set of steel RSR front and rear flares for a sum that won't involve selling a kidney.

Steve,

I'd like to add a little bit to what the others have already posted. If you want all metal bodywork, you have two choices. Most people use the turbo flares, as they are relatively affordable and you can still get them. The downside is that they aren't exactly the same shape and not all of the difference is in the lips. The curve of the flares is different where they attach to the body. In my opinion, the turbo flares look better than original RSR flares in this regard. They blend into the body more smoothly. A few years ago I had an opportunity to by a 1973 RSR clone built by a friend of mine. He had a bunch of money in it, as it had a lot of correct RSR parts used in it's construction, including the flares. He had obtained these years ago and squirreled them away for a rainy day. In the end, I didn't like the look of the flares. Take a look at pictures of the silver Martini RSR in the factory museum to get an idea of what I'm talking about here. The silver color does a good job of showing the contours. Do a Google search and you'll find pictures of it.

If you want all metal RSR flares, you can have a metal fabricator make some for you using fiberglass copies as a pattern. This is not cheap and you have to make sure the fiberglass ones were pulled from an actual RSR. Keep in mind that the Porsche factory made these cars with a lot of hand work and weren't as concerned in 1973 as you'd think in making them all look the same. Not all RSRs have identical flares.

You can also use fiberglass front fenders and a metal rear ones. There are lot's of genuine RSRs running around with fiberglass front fenders.

Another option for a metal rear flare is to start with a turbo flare and have it reworked to look like an RSR flare. This takes a fair bit of talent and you cmayget close enough to the correct look for most people.

Lastly, you can use fiberglass flares front and rear, bonded to the original steel fenders. This is probably the least expensive route. Long term, it might not be a great option if you're picky about the cosmetics of the car.

Have fun,
JR

Could someone point out the difference other than bumper junctions?

TRE Cup 08-07-2006 02:50 PM

besides the vertical portion of the lips/ fender openings (which you commented on earlier), the front flares on the rsr were elongated ala ST. They did not have a completely symetrical shape like the front turbo flares. so the fronts had a more "humped" appearance

TRE Cup 08-07-2006 02:57 PM

look at this picture of 3009 (absolutely all original with exception of the ducktail) Note the slightly upward angle on the front flares too
no where near as nice looking as the turbo flares

Bill,

As I said, not all RSRs look the same. What's more, many of them have been crashed and repaired and are no longer wearing their original panels. Here's a photo that may help illustrate the shape I'm talking about:

I don't know the chassis number of this first one but it may be one of the protoypes, as you can see it has some features that weren't on the production RSRs. It does illustrate the flare shape I'm talking about, particularily in the rear. Here's a photo of another car that shows the front a little better:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1154991322.jpg

I've looked at several of these cars in the flesh, including examples at the Porsche factory. It's easy to see the differences in the flesh; it's less easy to see them in pictures. I have taken pictures of quite a few but they are all 35mm and I don't have the ability to scan them. If you search the net and the books that are out there, I think you'll see the differences I'm talking about.

Cheers,
JR

Bill,

Here are a couple more shots that might help. They were obtained from Armando Serrano's site, which is a great place to study the RSR. Thanks Armando!

Here's a link to the site:

There are quite a few more photos, including some taken when the cars were new, which are more valuable to ascertain details, as the cars hadn't been owned (and repaired) by race teams at that point.

Cheers,
JR

my rsr clone had turbo steel flairs all around including the steel extensions on the fronts. the previous owner did a crap job and made it all look good with the help of bondo. i decided to keep the rear flairs and fix them w/ minimal bondo. the front fenders were replaced with rennspeed rsr types. the shape is definitly different. they stick out the same amount but the rsr ones taper inwards to the bumper much more than the turbo style. i had to get a rennspeed bumper to match. the overall shape is a little more rounded than the turbo.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1155001290.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1155001469.jpg

Go back to my previous post on the Gunnar Racing build up ( http://gunnarracing.com/index.html
) ..and look at the 12/03/01 entry..... for details on the front fender...
