memory loss
 

noticed my recenlty blaupunkt cd deck loses its memory(clock/settings) upon start-up on my '68 911L. please bear with me on the sequence of events for the past month to track down my problem.

1 reputable car stereo shop installed new cd deck. picked up the car to discovery i needed a jump to get it out of their garage. figured they worked on it several hours with doors/hood open. no big deal.
2 later noticed the new stereo would cut out during large surge(headlights/ blower/ turn signal/ brakes all on)
3 took it back to stereo shop to have them ck their work. everything fine except battery level low.
4 installed new battery from the folks at sears where i was told their diagnostics computer indicated "charging system inoperable".
5 drove straight to my very reputable mechanic who confirmed alt was bad.
6 installed rebuilt alt and new regulator.

it has now been about a week since battery/alt/regulator install and noticed twice so far that my stereo loses its memory. although it does not cut out during large surges.

i would of course appreciate any feedback as to the problem and who i should repay a visit to first. i trust that all the shops will warrant their work with no problem. thanks.

I just installed a cd in my car and there are two wires that need to be connected to a hot terminal. One is connected through the starter and the other is connected to a terminal that remains hot all the time. It is this terminal that maintains the memory on the unit. The installer who did your cd probably didn't make the proper connetions.
You might want to look at the scematic for the radio and check his connections. This will probably solve your problem.

I'll second that. Some less than careful places will put the "always hot" wire and the "switched wire" on the same switched power line. Hence when you turn it off, the memory goes.

Keep in mind that most of these radios have a battery backup internally to hold memory for short-term power outs. This may explain the intermittent memory loss, depending on how long the car was run last time (more or less time to charge the internal batterty)

thanks for replying. since my post there has been no memeory loss. i'll ck the connections as advised. the car is my daily driver for a plush commute of 5 miles per day and average about 75-100 miles on the weekend. so that mught explain things as well. again thanks for the replies.
