couple of questions about bumperette removal
looked through a couple of old threads and I like the look without the rear bumperettes. My question is on an 87 Carrera there are license lights to deal with. Do the bumperettes just unscrew and the wires for the lights can be taped or is there more to it? I would like to try but not if it requires modifications or major changes to the car.
thanks erik

For most of us, lighted plates are required by law.
Many of the threads I've read indicate that owners disconnect the original light 'fixtures' and replace them with something else either mounted to the bumper or with lighted plate frame bolts. Some are very creative in sourcing the fixtures... Thought I read that one guy nabbed some lights from the rear of a Honda or the like at a junkyard, painted them, and mounted them on the bumper. Looked great too! I'll be using the lighted liscense frame bolts... Eric

This is too funny cause I JUST removed my bumperettes last night! I unbolted it, used a rubber mallet and tapped on the studs to free them. Unscrewed the lights and unhooked the wires. It already looks a ton better! I have a few holes to fill/cover and I'm set. Very easy removal process.
Ok, as for lighting the new set up here are a couple of links that I liked. It depends on your preference of course. But here's what I just ordered: http://www.billetspecialties.com/item.asp?cid=6&scid=187&pid=244 Some other options: Brushed Aluim: http://www.stylinconcepts.com/part.aspx?partid=35600&scid=affprod Black: http://www.***************/productpage.aspx?pid=103489&name=Illuminated+Frame

I think it's just 3 13mm nuts on each bumperette and a mallet as Bill suggests.

Bill, I could not see from the link, but the last link to the black frame - is it aluminium or plastic??

I'm not sure if that black plate is plastic or alum. I wanted a polished frame so I didn't look into that one that much. It was just the first one I found. I looked on Pelican, but I couldn't find any.

Do you have any pictures of the bumper minus the bumperettes before you patch all the holes? I am curious just what work to patch up would need to be done.

Counterclockwise?

Can you not buy bumper plugs?
It would get you through until you needed paint.

I'd recommend having the unwanted holes TIG welded up - here's mine before paint - no filler, just abrasive-wheeled...

Rick964 - Here's a pic of the bumper without the bumperettes. There are 3 holes to fill. But in my case I'm going to drill a hole right behind the plate frame so I can hook up the license plate light.
911Rod - Yes there are body plugs out there that would work and you could touch up around the holes and paint the plugs to get you though till paint. But it really depends on what's going on with the corrosion behind the bumperettes. One side doesn't look too bad whereas the other side could use paint. Jean Berk - This bumper is Alum and is actually pretty thick. Could you use a MIG welder to weld in the Alum rods? Solid core wire with gas. That's what I was planning on doing. On a side side note: Here's a welding question before I go blind! If I have a auto darkening helmet (1/20000 sec) can I watch as I strike the arc or am I'm going to hurt my eyes? dorschman - Really, I'm not trying to hijack your thread just trying to get more info for everyone thinking of this project. Great Thread by the way!

Not sure about MIG welding in ally - tried it once without much success. No harm in trying on the inside of the bumper though...

All the circled holes needed filled. The 2 horizontal holes are where the studs added to the inside. |
