1980 911SC Cigarette Lighter Replacement

This sounds simple, but I'm a little baffled. I want to replace the cigarette lighter. How do I get to it. Do I go through the trunk or is there an easier way. I can't quite reach the area when I pull out a gauge. There doesn't seem to be any access from under the dash. Let me know if any of you have "the secret". Thanks!

Access it through the trunk. You can also remove the glovebox and get to it that way. There is a steel sleeve that screws onto the receptacle to hold it in place.

Took out glove box. No access whatsoever. Opened trunk and although I can move vent and A/C ducts out of the way...physically can't reach the lighter. Went back to the glove box area and drilled a 3/4" hole to create access so I can hold the back of the sleeve. This went great right up to the point where I cut through a sleeve containing 4 wires (which are now cut). These wires were so taught that I don't have the room to re-join them. I went back to the trunk and have complete access to one section but not the other. I will work on that this weekend. At least I was able to meet my main objective. According to the "book" I would have to remove the front windshield to remove any part of the dash. I chose not to take that option. I'd rather deal with the splicing of wires, so I'm not complaining too much.

I have an 83 sc , my lighter stopped working , I think I pulled out the element , and turned the metal rim counterclockwise and it loosened , It was amazing because like you I couldnt figure it out, I am assuming 80 and 83 are the same. Let me know how you make out.

Ok. So I have re-attached the wires. My glow ring must be shot as it doesn't heat up. I know the rest is good as I plugged a radar detector in and it works. I have put everything back together and it looks and works great. Thanks for the encouragement and direction!
