MSD vs. Permatune

my intermittent problem of the engine cutting out while driving (accompanied by a jerky RPM meter) has led my mechanich to believe (over the phone) that the problem is either in the distributor (points), or the ignition unit...

the dis cap and points/rotor were just replaced, so unless another adjustment will do the trick, we're on to the ignition unit...

i know that some of this has been covered somewhere here, but one more time: if i have a choice of spending $280 on a permatune unit, or $380 on an MSD unit (and i don't mind spending the extra $100 unless they are a complete waste of money), are there any downs to going with MSD?

I have been using the MSD AL6 and it has performed very well. The only downside of this unit is some other units of the same price range have infinatly adjustable rev limiters. While the MSD uses these little resistance pils. The unit comes with 4000,6000,7000 RPM. You can buy others but they only come in sets of ten ( in 100 RPM increments). For street use in a 911 the 6000 that comes with the unit will work great (4000 if you realy want to protect your engine and don't go very fast )

well...the deed is done...

i will have an MSD unit and "Ignitor" point-less ignition tomorrow, and Don, my porsche-mechanic-become-HTML-programmer friend, will set it up with me...

i will keep you posted about the changes and its results.

OK...so even Don said afterwards that he admits to having made a mistake: never put in two new things at once...

not that anything really bad happened, but it still adds another piece to the puzzle...

he took the distributor out, checked it for excessive play in the bearings and was happy to report that it was nearly perfect (as one would expect after only 38K miles)...

the little nipple/plate that pushed the points apart did turn out to be borderline worn, and the intermittent cut-outs could very well have been related to that (Warren, you're right as so many times before)...ground wire and that plate were perfect and looked like they had been replaced not too many years ago...

so putting in the Ignitor alone would have probably done the trick (and Don proceeded to put it in)...he also, however, proceeded to take the old coil out, replaced it with the Bosch Blue Coil that i had to get with my MSD unit, took the old CD unit out of the loop, and then we got in and drove the car...at first it seemed like the Ignitor, Blue Coil and no CD worked just fine, but upon stepping into the pedal, i noticed that the car felt like strapped throat above 3000RPM...everytime i hit the gas it would just sort of flatten out at 3-3.5K (the tach was not working due to the rewiring)...

Don checked the timing again (perfect), checked the wiring again with his instruments to make sure that he didn't mess anything up (perfect)...unfortunately the sun was going down and we had to stop...

after driving off i noticed (silly me) that the gas was near empty (the light was beginning to come on), so i thought...hmmm...maybe it was the result of this...i filled her up, and must admit that it appears to have gotten better after that...

now i don't know whether i am just wishful thinking, or whether the gas really was the problem...upon accelerating hard, the car still sems to flatten out at higher RPM's (and i don't mean the natural cut off at 6K)...i've driven about 30 miles since the changes, and things definitely feel better, but not perfect yet...it'll be monday or tuesday until Don has time to check back into it...

the choices are to take the Blue Coil off again, put the CD back into the loop.

take the Ignitor off again and put the points back in.

put the MSD in to complete the job, and see whether that takes care of the flat spot (which Don does not think is the case).

his recommendation over the weekend is: put some Injector cleaner into the car...get a new fuel filter...although he changed it 2K miles ago, he thinks that after the car stood still for most of the past 10 years, one filter might not be enough to clear all the residue from all that standing around...

Oh, most importantly though: the intermittent cut-outs are gone so far...the flat spot feels like a totally different issue, but no stalling since.

just wanted to share this experience so far, for all it is worth.

thanx for litening.
