After Market Plug Wires
After replacing my O.E.M. Beru connector type plug wire again and again, I am wondering if I could use a nice 8-9MM silicon jacketed set of wires that were designed for a newer OHC car on my 68 911.
Any suggestions out there? It would be nice to pick up a set of good wires at a local parts store for a change. |

Why don't you just replace the black neoprene individual wires with a piece of stainless steel cored 7 mm premium silicone wire like the orange AC Delco wire I use. You did know both ends 'unscrewed' from the black wire, right? You should also check each Beru connector with an Ohmmeter ... should measure 3000-5000 Ohms (my spare connector measures 3218 Ohms, but any STEADY reading 3-5K would be OK, as long as it isn't OPEN) ... the CDI can jump across an open connector for a while -- until the plug is fouled!!! You probably won't notice a miss until hot weather! In cooler temps the CDI puts out a higher voltage!

Early_S_Man,
Great Suggestions! Yes I knew the wires "unscrewed" since I replaced my air seal rubber grommets, but I never really thought about buying bulk wire. Where did you get your wire, the stainless steel cored 7 mm premium silicone wire sounds exactly like what I want? I appreciate the addtional information about the resistance in the connectors, this gives me the perfect excuse to buy a new digital multimeter, and relagate the old analog one to the basement. |

I bought mine here locally at the largest parts house in town, it just happened to be AC-Delco, I wanted something with a known brand on it, have heard Belden also has some and maybe Autolite, too make it.
I guess you know by now VW doesn't make or sell those original 111.905.449 air seals any more ... they only have the 'A' revision part that won't work on the Beru connector, but any foreign car parts house can get the original design 'clones' from Brazil, and they work fine, just have to replaced every year or so ... I buy them 20 or 30 at a time so I won't get caught with a shortage! I ALWAYS keep haf a dozen or more in my glove compartment, and check for 'shriveled' seals at every plug ... when I check my tire pressures! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 03-18-2000).] |
