Red face Fire Under My Engine Today!!!

Hello Everyone:

I removed my near 30 year old cat and replaced it with a Bursch Steel Cat By-Pass pipe today... Found here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_EXHprf_pg19.htm#item18

After driving for a while I noticed a stinky smell so I pulled over and found the black paint was 'melting' off the pipe. No biggie, kept driving. Parked her for a while to clean-up garage and double check the everything and all seemed good except the stinky paint smell. Well, early this afternoon I took her out again for a short ride. Upon parking her after a 20 minute run I noticed a lot of smoke coming out of the engine bay area. I look under and see flames around the area where the pipe connects to the heat-exchangers! At this point I'm running for the hose and thinking about the fire extinguisher I hear about many of you buying that I have not... I put out the small fire and inspect and things look OK. My guess is that some of the rusted edges left when I removed some of the almost completely rusted driver's side heat-exchanger 'boot' had heated up enough to actually burn... Could this be the case? All that I can see is the rusted edges look charred a little. Other than that I have no idea as the engine is clean and leaks no oil. What would be your suggestions for the next couple of months until I can get some new SSI's on my baby?

By the way, the headers inside the exchanger look good with no rust holes and my baby sounds much better without the cat.

Eric

can't be just the rust!

you have smoke + FLAME.

Something is wrong. I would not start the car before I found out what. I might even worry about having it parked in the garage... Disconnect both battery cables while you figure out the problem.

Could you please post a few pics with a bright light illuminating the affected area of your engine and the exhaust components.

You may also want to check the wires on you O2 sensor under there.

Oil burns pretty hot and doesn't go out easily. Was there any paper stickers on your new pipe? Did you use any solvents to loosen old bolts (although I would think that it would have evaporated by now). Find what is burning (rusty metal does not burn).
