RS touring bumpers
Hi all,
I understand there were two bumper options for the '73 RS, the lightweight and the touring. If I got it right the lightweight is a one piece fiberglass replacement for the whole bumper and the touring has regular early bumper pieces with flared ends to fit the wheel flares. If this is correct, I have a couple of questions - first is there a separate part number for the touring flared bumpers? Or is it a weld-on extension for the bumper ends? Or were they all hand modified by a panel beater? Is there a currently available OE or aftermarket supplier for the extensions? Thanks, Charlie PS. I am aware of the many aftermarket fiberglass bumpers that are available. Oops, I should've checked the archives better, here is a thread on this: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?threadid=53297&highlight=rs+bumper

The Porsche parts listing only shows one bumper for the 1973 Carrera:

The metal RS flared bumpers are available as I've seen them for sale (also ebay on occasion). I think Dave at MS Road and Race carries them (msroadrace@msroadrace.com). Be prepared to sit down when he quotes you the price (I think around $400+ ea.). Will you need a matching aluminum license plate panel as well?
Also try gilbert.boswurth@ps.ge.com. He had a set for sale awhile back. Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

Sorry, I don't mean to imply that I am going to run out and buy some factory bumpers. That is piston and camshaft money we're talking about there!
I was actually hoping I could find a set of weld on extensions for my stock bumper pieces, since I'm fairly decent at running a mig welder and a plasma cutter. It would be easy for me to cut off the old ends and weld on new ones. Others have mentioned that a good panel beater can modify the stock bumpers. I'm too cheap to pay someone to do it and I've never done any fabrication of visible body panels before. I may try it since if I fail the only thing I have to lose are the stock bumpers I have. I can always buy a full fiberglass bumper as a fall back (backup plan A). I saw some fiberglass bumpers - not the one piece thing, but just the outer rear bumpers - on ebay. I lost the auction though. Anyone know where to order those new? (backup plan B) FYI - the aluminum panel is available in reproduction from restoration design, and possibly even Pelican (a while ago Wayne mentioned he was going to start carrying their stuff). Last time I saw them they were well under a hundred dollars. Thanks.

Lets go back to the original question. I believe that the only difference between the lightweight and touring versions of the Carrera RS was the trim , not in the body parts. The order code for the lightweigt was M471, which reduced the weight of the touring model (M472) by 100Kg to 970Kg. The bumpers are the same.

Thanks all.
Nick, sorry about my confusion. I thought I read something about the touring vs lightweight bumpers in Bruce Andersons book that said they have different rear bumpers. I'll go back and read it again to see if I was just not paying attention. Then again even if it did say that BA is wrong sometimes too... Cheers.

Charlie:
I posted the original query for getting the "weld on" RS extensions. There definitely was a difference between the lightweight and touring RS rear bumpers. The lightweight had fiberglass, while the touring had the stock metal bumpers with the RS extensions welded on from the factory. About 10 years ago, you could get the "weld on" extensions from Troutman in California. I did just this. Then in a fit of stupidity, sold them when I converted the car to more of a lightweight look with the fiberglass bumper (could kick myself now). Supposedly they are no longer available. Every once in awhile, you'll see steel bumpers with the extensions come up for sale for some exorbitant price ($1000 +). I have not seen the metal "weld on" extensions for sale. We need to commission that company here in the US that does the replica Porsche panels to stamp out a set of these for us. Just a thought. I'm still interested in any leads. I'm going to try contacting some people in England and mainland Europe next. -Doug ![]() |
