Jim Sims' A/C Muffin Fan

I read in a recent post by Jim Sims about how he installed a small 4" square or so computer "muffin" fan just in front of the air intake to the evaporator below the passenger floor board on a 911 he was working on. This was done to improve air flow through the evaporator (and to improve air circulation through the car).

These fans are cheap (and quiet), so I decided to put one in my car. Mine is rated at 50 CFM (most are in the 20s) and is right around $10 at my local Microcenter. I don't have any scientific testing to back me up, but I think there's greater airflow across the board -- enough that I was using fan speed 1 driving around today. So far, this looks like a good, inexpensive upgrade. Thanks, Jim!

Brian

I've been thinking about doing the same thing for a few years. Thanks. We've got several more months of summer left in Texas and I'm planing on replacing the front condenser, evap, receiver/dryer and maybe all the lines so I can drive more this summer. I've been having to much fun driving the FJ Cruiser I got in April and miss the Targa.

Are you saying you mounted it onto the resistor pack? Any pics? Does the fan run at one speed only? Where are you getting the power to run the fan? Thanks

Liquid R-134a going forward!

Search engine has been "flaky" the past little while; Wayne claims he fixed it. Seems slow but working today.

Fans

A fan as used on most of the current water cooled motorcycles might be a better candidate. They are easy to pick up at a motorcycle salvage yard and they come is different sizes.

The fan is mounted using zip ties ahead and in front of the resistor pack and under the passenger floorboard. I tapped the red/white wire to the resistors for power (it's hot when the fan is switched on) and used an in-line fuse. I picked up a ground at one of the screws that mounts the evaporator air intake to the smuggler's box. The fan runs at one speed only, but you can't hear it over the sound of the evaporator blower when the A/C is switched on. You can, however, feel more air flow returning to the evaporator intake.
