A/C or Muffler ?

I've got an 83SC 3.0 with the York A/C.
The A/C works as well as I've been told
it's supposed to for what it is.
I've got 1,000.00$ to spend.With that in
mind, would the money be best spent on the
rotary A/C or a new exaust ??
I can't afford the whole exaust system
ssi headers/muffler,remember I only have
a grand.Thanks !

Well, if I am not mistaken, a grand will just about cover SSIs and an OEM-style '65-'73 muffler, if you check the ads in Excellence, carefully!

What is more important to you, power or comfort?

The power or comfort question is the problem
Just how much NOTICABLE power could I expect
and my A/C does work, just not very well,so
if enough power is realized, I could go
faster and make up for bad air!
This Excellence Mag keep comming up in NG
and being fairly new to this, how do I
go about getting a subscription?

I seem to recall someone posting a few weeks ago that SSIs + early factory muffler was good for 24 hp on his car (SC) on a dyno. I would think any large book/mags store should have a copy of Excellence on the stands with the other car mags.

Chuck,
When you say your AC works less than desired, do you mean air volume from the vents is too low, or the AC is not cold enough?? If the volume is too low, check the underside of the evaoprator in the smugglers trunk. Mine was coated with a dirty sludge, cutting airflow by over 2/3. If it is temp, look into your front condenser fan. Make sure it runs when the AC is on. You can also install Spal 6" fans between the condenser and whaletail (if you have one) for better cooling of the condenser charge. I am aboout to do this mod. I should have results in a few weeks.

I did a exhaust conversion and bought used parts through this site. Paid $450 for a B&B Triflow, and purchased two Triad SS headers for $200. Only one side has a heater box but the power increase was amazing. The decision of power vs. comfort is for you to make, but here is my .02. If your AC works okay and you can live with it, go with the exhaust upgrade, you will be amazed at the difference.

Scott, how do you get to the evaporator
to check for sludge? also I heard that a
Fabspeed exaust will give same power as
a header system at 1/2 the cost any
comments ??

1) The evaporator is in the smugglers trunk in the front (trunk). Under the carpet, on the floor, you will see a door. Once inside, you'll see the A/C fan on a plastic box. Remove the short hose, then remove the fan and shroud. (be careful of the temp probe to the rt side). Once the fan/shrouh combo is off, the evap is directly under.
2) You need to stuff rags in the A/C return holes. Pull back the carpet in the front footwells near the console. Remove the wood floorboards. on the console side there are two return "holes". pack them with rags.
3) return to the smugglers chest and you can gently lift the A/C evap up and, with a mirror, see the underside. if it is dirty, it is probably clogged.
4) cleaning process. while holding the evap unit up, stuff a shop vac hose underneath. get your garden hose w/the nozzle. Turn the vac on and spray water down through the evap. focused stream works best.
I have also seen AC guys use an acid sol'n to clean units, but I only used soap and a hose.
The difference for me was quite dramatic.

The Spal fan setup is an idea that I have had for about 3 months now. If you have a whaletail, then you can do this. Maybe you can if you don't but I couldn't say.

The AC condenser is approx 7-8" by about 20something" I am going to install 3-5.6" fans accross the width of the condenser. Each fan produces approx 300 CFM. I will mount them above the condenser, below the tail grill. Hopefully it will do 3 things.
1) cool the condenser more
2) I will install a time delay relay to run after the car shuts off. I want to prevent the heads from heat soaking.
3) I will run the fan in stop and go traffic to help 'force feed' the main fan.

The fans are available (cheapest I could find)from the following link.
http://www.infinet.com/~photon/spalfans.htm
the delay relay is available from http://www.newark.com
I have not yet figured out a way to make this system temp driven, but I am talking to a few folks about it.

I should have my "test installation" done in about 2-3 weeks. I'd be glad to post results on PP forum.

Scott.
Thanks for the info !!!
I followed your directions and upon
removing my blower fan I found that my
hose that connects the blower housing
to the vent was dry rotted !!!
full of holes. This was the 4 inch
flex hose that connects the plastic
fan housing to the plastic vent channel.
I tried to get part from local Porsche
dealer and no luck, managed to get a air
intake hose at Auto Zone - a local auto
parts store, for 6 bucks. Air now works
better, still not what I'd call great
but better., Thanks.
oh yea, no trash or muck in bottom of
evaporator, coils and fins clean !

Scott and Chuck, There are numerous sources for fans in the surplus electronics market: MECI, Hosfelt, All-Electronics ... some are even thermostaticly-controlled, and typically under $20. I bought several (from MECI) a couple of years ago, with the idea of doing exactly what you have in mind ... in a couple of sizes, haven't gotten around to it yet, as the compressor is currently out of the car ... contemplating replacing the rubber hoses along each rocker panel with steel lines before I put my stash of R-12 into use for one last hurrah at trying to cool the 911!
