911 parts profile
would any-one have info on the interchangability of porsche parts with other makes of vehicle? In the UK, a list of cross references exists to help obtain a fair price (944 turn signal relay $90.00 v.s VW unit $17.00) I don't want to appear cheap, but why pay through the nose for identical parts from the same manufacturer? As an example,I need the complete set of turn signals for 74 and on 911. Are these only produced for Porsche?

Chris:
Though I am certainly not an authority on interchangeability, I doubt that you will find many BODY PARTS that are interchangeable. Such parts are pretty specific to Porsche. However, there are many interchangeable mechanical parts, since all the German manufacturers buy their vendor parts from the same vendors. However, also be aware that these same vendors do make specific parts for specific manufacturers, and there might well be differences. Some marques even place their own part number on it, such as a Behr Oil Cooler has both their number and Porsche's number on it. I hope you get better answers than this from those in the business, but yes I have used other parts from other vendors (the regulator for the 911SC, for example, is made by Rhone-Poulenc, a French firm which manufacturs for lots of other marques). Thus, the conclusion is that a regulator is a regulator, no matter which marque uses it. But body parts are all visible differentiating characteristics between marques, and even models within marques, and thus non-interchangeable......Andras |
