Capacity of oil tank alone

A quick search didn't turn up an answer for me. I changed my oil on my '73 911E only about 1,000 miles ago, but had to fix an oil leak in the oil tank. I only drained the oil tank, not the crankcase. Approximate how much oil should I add?

It depends....

Cars with a front oil cooler typically have a total capacity of 13 qts... with a refill capacity of about 9-10. If the car was recently run and warm...about 6 or so comes from the tank and 3 or so comes from the engine. If the engine is cold ( wasn't run recently), then most of the oil drained back into the engine case and the values are reversed...about 3 comes from the tank and 6 from the engine...

Keep in mind also that cars without front coolers have a total system capacity of about 9 qts...not 13.

Here's a question...why didn't you transfer the "taken out" oil into a clean milk gallon jug.....then just add back what came out? You'll know what came out. I advise this all the time for the oil change question threads......

My oilpan is very dirty and has had some really nasty oil/dirt/sludge in it, so I didn't want to re-use contaminated oil. Its the enclosed kind of oilpan that is nearly impossible to clean.

Thanks for your help!

I think what he is saying is, by using the gallon milk jugs you will know how much came out of the tank 1 gal =4quarts

Ah, I see, thanks guys. I drained the oil into the same pan with the old oil from my girlfriend's Honda, so measuring it wouldn't work too well. I just added three quarts (engine was cold when I drained the tank) and the oil level was near perfect once warm!
