Engine is Coming Out for Clutch Replacement.
I am have the mechanic take the engine out of my 68 911 to replace the clutch, T.O. Bearing, Presure Plate, and of course seals.
While this is occuring, what else should I do since the engine is out? I just tested compression (all plugs out, Throttle W.O., but engine cold) and found all cylinders to be within 7% of 150 PSI. I have Orginal Valve Covers, and Orginal (but rebuilt) Chain Tensioners. I was planning on doing the following 1) Replacing valve covers with newer style and doing valve job. 2) Opening up Timing Chain Covers, and adding the locking collars that prevent total colapse. 3) Rebuilding Shift couplings fore and aft. 4) Replacing the speedometer gear. 5) Repacking the C.V. Joints. My mechanic works with me and I plan to to the engine work while he does the rest. Any suggestions about what else I should do. Thanks |

One more thing, that is fairly easy to replace, would be the 1st gear synchro ring, it is inside the nosecone of the transaxle. If you aren't having any grinding or hard shifting into first gear, then your synchro hub is probably OK, as is the shifting sleeve.
The rest of your plan sounds OK. you might consider taking off the carbs and linkage temporarily and removing the cooling shroud, so the cylinders, and heads, and oil cooler could be vacuumed or blown out to get rid of any debris blocking the flow of cooling air. It would also be a good time to modify the cooling tin per Bruce Anderson's recommendations in his 'Porsche 911 Performance Handbook.' ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
