Goofy handling from a '71 S
I have been enjoying my '71S for track days and know my front wheel bearings are about due but..... If I'm cruising along in third at a steady clip and get on the gas, the front of the car sorta swings to the right and if I chop the gas it swings back to the left. Almost got away from me at an AutoX event recently. Could this be a funtion of wheel bearings? something else? Its got a hot 2.7L in back, lowered, and lots of other track goodies ect. ect.
Any help would be appreciated Nabil |
Nabil,
I dont think its the wheel bearings. Probably has more to do with your transmission and engine/trans mounts. What type of tranny do you have and does it have LSD? Hopefully one of the experts like Tyson or Grady will chime in and give you the full explanation. Any way Bump to the front page. Edit - Not having a cup of joe yet I think I may have that backwards. I am thinking about the engine torqing under WOT and putting more to the right rear wheel bring the nose of the car to the left. Does the nose lift or lighten when WOT? Does it happen in all gears or only third? Maybe when I get a cup or so in me Ill remember what Im talking about. :D |
I second Dan's thoughts that the issue is in the rear of the car not the front, maybe weired rear aliment? spring plate bushings? I do not know but I would definitely look at the rear of the car

It does have a LSD in it and yes the front does lighten noticeable (don't they all?). I didn't think about the alignment as it seems to track fairly straight in a steady cruise. I have a suspicion that the front could be a little stiffer to match the really stiff spring rate in back. Was out beating it up all day today for 'tuning purposes', it never gets old!!

Missing the right driveshaft? Just kidding. Run it up on a rack, or put it up on jack stands and give it a good inspection. Take a look at all of the suspension mounting points and make sure everything is solid. Sometimes things can work loose, causing the car to go out of alignment. The spring plate to banana arm bolts, and the camber and toe-in adjustment bolts should be checked for tightness. Make sure the banana arm pivot bushings and spring plate pivots aren't sloppy. Check the camber plates under the hood, torsion bar mounts, tie rod ends; that kind of stuff. It should be obvious if something came loose. I don't think I would drive it at speed until the problem is found.

Thanks Jeff - I plan on spending my tomorrow on my back!
Cheers, nabil |
Corner balance off will do this, and it's more noticeable at speed. Would have to be way off on stock T-bars, but the stiffer the T-bars, the more important the corner balance becomes.
I'm assuming you already jacked up the front end and checked the front wheels for excessive play. Don't want to loose a wheel. Did this problem come on quick or slowly? |
