'77 gearbox
In the Pelican FAQ, for model year differences it says the '77 had an "Improved gearbox". What was improved?
It looks like they are still talking mid year, the SC starts on the next paragraph. Griff. P.S. Joined Mid9, having problems loging on. |

The case was changed from magnesium to aluminum. Inside, they went to a single piece lock band for 1st and 2nd gears, asymmetric teeth and a smaller synchro ring for 1st and a stronger guide sleeve for 1st/2nd. The internal changes were to improve the shift quality and reduce the shifting effort. 3rd, 4th and 5th gear were unchanged.
Porsche make a bunch of small changes each year. Some you hear about, others you don't. Not all changes occur when the big changes occur, like when the SC entered production. JR |

Thanks JR.
That it a significant change. It gets me wondering what other differences there may be between the 76-77. The only other I can find is the centre dash air vent! All the histories I have seen gloss over it with a statements like "the 77 was virtually a carry-over from the 76". Which is fine unless you actually have one... Griff P.S. How can one tell the difference between the boxes? Last edited by dagriff; 08-15-2006 at 02:16 PM.. |

There were other changes. '77 was the first year for a booster for the brakes.
Get the gearbox type number and serial number and one of us will tell you what it is. JR |

The 1977 is a transitional year they say.
When I installed my Seiene shifter kit there was something about 77 and up, perhaps it had to do with the coupler or the shifter, either way I was glad to have 1977 I remember. 1976 was mostly galvanized, excluding the roof (don't worry Targa owners) mid/later1976 should be all galvanized. However they were still getting the correct and consistent thickness thing sorted out. This means some cars were prone to rust just like the early years, others had it too thick and paint came off in sheets, or so I've read. There are whole books on this topic; all reading it will do is make you wish you had the latest Porsche you can afford. That ain't right ![]()

Which end and how? I need to lower my rear or raise my front, 1/2" would be a good start.

'77 was the first year for the two-piece adjustible spring plate at the rear.
The front bars on any 911 are adjustible with a bolt. JR |
