Engine casing stud, '74 911
 

Hello guys,

I have a '74 911 with serious engine problems. I was wondering if any of you could point me in the right direction as to how to go about replacing the engine or having it replaced. I assume I'll save a lot of money if I find the engine and take it too the shop along with the car, and just have them exchange it. Or maybe I can drop the engine out on my own and have it rebuilt at a machine shop. I just don't know what is best, and I was hoping I could get a clue here.

Actaully, I have been told that an engine casing stud is stripped and this is probably the cause of the low compression in one cyclinder and the severe oil leak. Does this make sense?

Finally, I read on this board about the 6 volume Porsche manual. Where's the best place to get one? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Sorry to hear of your being the latest victim of the 2.7's famous tendency to pull-out or break the cylinder-head studs!

I am not so sure if you really want to pay a shop to make the wiring additions/alterations necessary for a 3.2 Motronic conversion ... that could run into some big bucks, fast! A 3.0 SC engine swap would be a trivial conversion by comparison ... I suspect the difference in shop costs would pay for a new set of SSI's and muffler, for a gain of 20-25 hp!!! You may want to contact Jerry Woods to get an idea of the conversion costs. He advertises in Excellence, and is in your 'general' area.

Porsche Factory Manuals are available at your local dealer, from Pelican Parts, from MY Porsche, and a number of other sources that sell Porsche literature. Just look up these above-listed, and go from there. You might also try Amazon.com, but they may not be available there; I've never tried them for such arcane stuff......Andras

I ordered Bruce Anderson's Porsche Performance Handbook from Amazon last week. I'll check that out first, but I assume I'll end up getting the Porsche volumes too.
