Clutch removal--ok, what next
Engine's out. It's on the Pelican parts 84 yr and later jack plate--the one with the wings for the heat exchangers--which I have to say works very well. It's balanced nicely on there. I laid the tires down and put another jack as you can see, but those aren' t really taking any weight. They're just there as failsafes.
I removed the bolts holding transmission+engine. Removed starter. Now, how heavy is the tranny? Can I pull this fuker off and set it down? I can't really tell how heavy anything is just now. If I slide the tranny off the engine; err, what is going to happen...okay, anyway, now that I've got them so they'll come apart, what do I do? Also...do I need to apply a lot of force to separate them? They don't budge just now. Thanks in advance to any and all help. Sorry about starting a new thread, but I can't find my old one. ![]()

yes doesnt weigh much i did mine that way, have you removed the linkage off of the bottom of the tranny? if so disconnect the wiring from the back up light switch and the speedometer sensor then loosin it up and it will slide right off. the one on my turbo on the other hand takes a couple of people

Kurt, get a furniture dolley or make one....they are priceless for moving the engine or the tranny around.

In reference to this thread:
First clutch replacement Looks good...I now have my clutch off. I'm looking at the picture here with the half-dozen scary looking flywheel bolts. I do not see any source for the grinding I heard. At some point, I couldn't shift...as though, when I pushed in the pedal, it wouldn't release. Then somehow after a while of effing around with it on a side street, that got unbound, and then it would work--I could push in the pedal and shift, but when I let off the pedal slowly, it would grind...or make a noice of metal on metal rubbing--until it was full seated, then it was normal. So, I have all this shT apart, and it basically just looks like what you have. I thought I would have seen a broken piece or something in there. Just tons of dust. In any case, when the engine and the transmission were together, after I had dropped them, I noticed that the transmission and engine weren't really flush. There was like 1/8" gap on the side w/ the starter. Yes, it appeared to just not be be lined up, like it was slightly loose on that side. Or maybe it was just my imagination. I see pages talking about a grinding sound when the clutch engages could be a bad input shaft bearing. While the tranny is light and looks like it would be fun to open up and look at, I already know it can't be worked on without special tools and *****. Any advice? Should I just buy new stuff: like the 3 piece kit pelican sells, put it all back together and hope for the best?

How old is the clutch? My engine and tranny were flush all around. I even made sure to clean the two surfaces before mounting the tranny to the engine again. What does the clutch disk look like? Any noticable wear to the springs, anything look funny on it? Can't be of much more help. My project is still going. Replacing all CV boots and repacking now. Hope to be done this week.

Thanks dave; it definitely wasn't flush on one side thinking back...the insides of mine are about the same as your, but I had a clutch put in like 02 when the fork broke... (I had replaced a cvjoint in 02, I didn't have any trouble getting those off this time. The first time it was a real stinker as you experienced.)
It's possible that somehow they loosened up and the input shaft was crooked or something...don't know. I don't see any source for the grinding. Nothing. Weird. Anyway, clutch was always way too hard. WAY harder than it should have been...now I'm wondering if the whole deal with the clutch was the fact that it wasn't on the engine straight. ****. no clue... I ordered the three piece pelican kit and another oil line for the 964. Wife is going to kill me, but the cars must be dealt with... ...always hoping someone else had this sort of thing happen and can dial me in. Thanks again...

If you weren't imagining the gap between the engine and transaxle ... the noise may have been coming from the pilot bearing in the center of the flywheel. It is a needle roller bearing and rather intolerant of the input shaft being misaligned off-axis! They tend to screech when the moly lube has dried out, and also when rusty from water splash that gets up into the transaxle clutch/flywheel area ... even when the shaft isn't misaligned!

No need to remove flywheel ... the pilot bearing comes off with three M6 Allen bolts in the center ... ![]()

Yep...I just got back in after looking at it. Looks "fine n dandy" to me hahaha but for 21 bucks, I might as well just append my order with another one to be safe. Put it all back together and see if it grinds when I let off the pedal. Chances are, in a few weeks, I'll end up with the engine out of the car again, but hopefully, it'll be faster and more fun next time.
