Buying a car, uncertain mileage.

I am looking at another car. Found one but, some concerns. 86 coupe, repaint, speedometer broken, around 150,00 miles, US car (I'm in Canada), no history, but "runs great, daily driver". $17,000 CAN$.

My question is, if the the PPI is OK, what some some things that I can still get burned on? It does seem to good to be true. And you what they say...

Comsetically it may not be in great shape (I have yet to see it) but this is not my concern.

Lawrence

Mileage is not the main concern with P-cars. But maintenance, history and abuse are. A PPI is a most and a "good" drive to follow. I would say that the body panels alignment, wheels distances from the datum and overall tightness are the most critical items to look for. Engine, transmssion, brakes... can be redone at a price - a bent body (wreck) NO WAY.

Good luck!

If you need another set of eyes, let me know. As I said in our email, it sounds too cheap.

I'm selling my '82SC, the car is well sorted, and I'm probably closer!

Kirk,

I PM'd you via the UCR website. I am starting to like the look of your car. I'll have to see how much I get from those bastard insurance adjusters.

I would take a serious look at Kirk's car. A well-sorted car from an owner-enthusiast would be my first choice.

Yep, I'd buy a Pelican's or a PCA member's can any day before buying one from someone else. That's just me...

These are two that I am interested in. Thoughts? I really like the 3.2.

Both of those look interesting. The 84 is probably the nicer car but it's hard to tell from pics & a small description. The 87 is high mileage & has those horrid (imho) wheels. Are you sure you could handle a non sunroof coupe after a cab though?

My cab got wrecked in a rear ender. My buddy was driving the car, bumper to bumper traffic, took evasive action and got away with his and his family's lives spared. The guy would have landed on top of them. After that...

Had a cab, was nice but I just didn't feel safe. Especially now.
Sunroof would be nice though..

I could look at either one of those cars for you before you spend money on a PPI....just PM me.

Neither one looks to be 'value priced'.

I agree PBH. Prices seem high. I hate to be rude and pitch a lower price, espically for the 84, being an estate sale. The 87 seems OK, I have some Fuchs to spruce it up.

I am chatting with the 87 owner right now. I appreciate the offer PBH. Nice chatting with you on the weekend.

That's part of offering your car up for sale.

I wouldn't say 'Your car is crap, it's not worth that', but it is reasonable to say 'I can only afford X', or 'the car needs a transmission, take X off your price and I'll buy it'.
