Targa rear wiper assembly on turbo tail?
Hi,
I'm currently looking at this rear wiper assembly from a 911SC Targa. Does anyone know whether or not it would fit or work on a turbo tail? If it would where would I put it? Thanks, Jeff 1976 911S |

Jeff:
The rear wipers were designed by Porsche AG for cars with any kind of rear spoiler. The spoiler acts to defeat the aerodynamic lift caused by the shape of the car. In later years, Porsche also introduced spoilers that were designed to impart down-force at the same time they were negating the lift. In all instances, all spoilers create turbulence between them and the rear window, thus creating a window cleaning problem. Note that on coupe which have no spoilers, the rain, and hence rain-borne debris, are washed off with the laminar flow over the window. This laminar flow is what causes the lift. Therefore, if there is a spoiler, it might be good to get a rear wiper. Check with your local dealer's parts catalog to see what is available. Generally, in Europe, folks use the rear wiper more than we do here in the States, since those folks drive their cars in ALL kinds of weather, not like we do, mostly in fair weather. So the answe to your question is yes, a rear wipere is available for your Targa, ESPECIALLY recommended if you have a Targa with a spoiler. Sources other than your dealer will have them too, but your local dealer is the quickest way to see what is available......Andras |

Andras,
Thanks for your reply. I recently bought a used turbo tail to put on my 911S(see TLC for Turbo Tail?). There's a hole in which the wiper arm comes out so I figured I should put a wiper assembly in it. I know what you're talking about when you say how the wind would sweep away any water or debris and the tail would prevent that from happening. Here in Hawaii the weather is sometimes quite unpredictable. It could be sunny one minute and pouring the next, so I think a rear wiper is a good thing to have. Thanks for the lesson on laminar flow.
