The wait is over: the SC hits the road...and the track! Some of you Pelicans are aware that my Father (NY65912) and myself got our hands on an 80 SC from another Pelican, with plans on turning it into a part-time street car and DE car/track weapon. here is is in all it's stock glory. I know it's a small pic, but there isn't much to look at being that it was a stock-bodied SC. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...b/DSCN0958.jpg well, here she is now: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0365.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0367.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0368.jpg Some of you may be looking at the pic and saying, "Ok, it's got some cool bumpers on it and a ducktail, and it's lowered, get to the good stuff!". I'm getting there... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0366.jpg Cobra seats and 6-point harnesses attached to an OG Racing cage. We scraped out about 30 pounds of sound insulation from this car, no joke. The P.O. really liked his sound, but who needs any other soundtrack than the Flat-6 pumping away, PMO's ingesting the atmosphere and a Monty Muffler spitting it all out?! And what a Flat-6 it is! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0362.jpg 46mm PMO's hint at what lies inside the engine ;) Here's the short list: JE Pistons 10:1 compression ratio Ported heads Dougherty DC40 cams SSI's MSD ignition Competition valve job Racing valve springs TI retainers 993 headstuds ...among other things (it's still a 3.0, BTW) wanna see it on the dyno? OK! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...h_DSCN0359.jpg right now she put down a little over 250hp to the wheels @ 6500rpm. That's all well and good, but the car has to turn right? Sure it does. It's sitting on almost every part out of the Elephant Racing catalog. 29mm front and 32mm rear torsion bars, fully adjustable swaybars, poly-bronze bushings all around, Bilstein shocks and more. What's that? Brakes? 930 Turbo brakes at all 4 corners haul the car down. So, there you have it. We'll be bringing this car to Watkins Glenn for a Metro PCA DE weekend next week to see how she does. It's light, it makes good power, it turns well and it stops well. Pops should have some fun. Don't worry, I'm going to co-drive it starting next season. Can't let him have all the fun :D Big, BIG thanks to Bill Rudtner and his crew at Rudtner's Racing for building this car, and for generally being a bunch of cool guys who love what they do, and it shows! decent pics coming this weekend. all of these pictures were taken in haste. oh, and the car is plenty quick :) |

Couple more pics for you guys http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0351.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0350.jpg as for the future, we're going to paint it Signal Orange for starters. Who really knows what is in store for this car! |
|
NICE car................ nice power as well.! |
|
WOW! Very cool. Nice Build. |

Sweet! How much does she weigh? Eric |

Hey Mike, The car is really coming along well. Duck tail was a good choice too. I put your shaved rear bumper on my car last weekend. It's still yellow, but I wanted to see how it looked anyway. It fit well with the bumper shocks you sent also. Only one bummer... I did snap one of the studs. I think some of the threads on it got a little jacked up and made it difficult to tighten, and then it got real easy. (whoops). The bumper is still rock solid on the car though. When I have the car painted I'll have a new stud welded on. Hope all is well. Keep the shiny side up!! |

a little bump for the daytime crew:) |

Nice car! I can't wait to see it in orange. Are you keeping the flag mirrors? I'd go with something racier. |

Mike, she's a beauty - even with the current color! (but Signal sounds sweet - not sure I've ever seen an SC in Signal). Anyway, congrats!! Are those Fuchs anodized? I'm leaning pretty hard toward having my black Fuchs ano'd just like that. |

Good looks don't have to be expensive;) |

Great car Mike! Somehow I bet that black Beetle has a trick or 2 as well. |

It's got a few tricks up it's rounded sleeves ;). My favorite trick is when people see that *gasp* it's an automatic :o I'll be driving it at the Riesentoter DE at Pocono North in September. Looking forward to that one :D |

Nice transfomation. Who made the fiberglass bits and how do they fit?? |

The fit is exceptional for fiberglass. Excellent quality, nice and sturdy. Highly recommended! |

Nicely done Mike, beautiful (where it all counts) car! It is a slippery slope my friend and you are running ass over tea kettle down hill :) Have fun with it! Here is my SC 10/1/02 http://www.standingwave.org/albums/p.../aaa.sized.jpg and 6/20/03 http://www.standingwave.org/albums/p.../aat.sized.jpg and 8/10/03 http://www.standingwave.org/albums/p.../aew.sized.jpg And by '05 it looked like this :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1155921061.jpg |

However, you can't please them all... I've got a guy on VWVortex trying to admonish me (us) for starting out with a really nice, solid SC as a basis for a track/street car. To me (us), it makes sense because there is no rust to be repaired, no damage from a crash, nothing hacked up, etc etc. Our car was not hacked up in any way, shape or form when it was modified. We know what we have and we wouldn't do anything to screw it up. Oh well...I guess some people will never be happy. We are not amongst those people:D |

I mixed and matched a lot of parts and time frames. The very best of WEVO and Elephant kit in the suspension, Weidman wheels, a '95 3.6 with cams, '86 930 brakes, a WEVO short box tranny with the shifter bits and a completely new interior to go with the Glasurit paint and Eurotech body work. Didn't have to do any of it to the original unmolested SC. Over time it became a "want" thing which is way better than a "have to" thing in the Porsche world :) Not to everyone's liking but there is no doubt it is my car. You guys will have a show piece and a work horse to be proud of when you are done. |
|
^^ Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, "want to" and "have to" sometimes get blurred so they begin to look like eachother. Funny how that happens ;) |
|
Ulgh, another sweet 911 that puts mine to shame. I guess im gonna have to buy you a beer if im in NY anytime soon. |

And don't look at it as putting your car to shame, look at it as another source of inspiration. SmileWavy |

New pics! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0377.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0383.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0379.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0378.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1/DSCN0385.jpg the car came in at 2464lbs without a driver, a tick over 2600 with a driver. Not too bad, if you ask me :) |
|
NIce! What size wheels are you running? 136# driver? My dog weights more than that :) |
|
Wheels are 16 x 7 & 16 x 8, just had a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 put on.......very nice. Weight is 2650 ish with driver. I have not weighed 136 lbs since the day I was born. What a difference a good corner balance makes! Overall I am exceptionally happy and impressed with the car, it sure beats the heck out of my M491 in the handling department. But those 930 brakes stop like NOW. Thanks to all for the very kind words. |
