sun roof

My sun roof on 83SC opens about 1" before it catches on the 1" flat metal that goes across the front of the opening. I can push the metal down and the roof will fully open. When I close the roof it will also hit the same metal and stop. The sun roof will fully close if I push the metal down. Does anybody know whats wrong and how to fix it?
