My nuts
Now that my wheels are almost mirror like I need to replace the lug nuts, question is do I need to replace them with aluminum, or can I buy chrome plated steel ones?

When I ordered the wheels I have now, I also ordered the lug nuts which are a polished alloy. I think you can get polished alloy lug nuts from most popular aftermarket companies. Fikse sells them. I would stick with alloy. I think the area of contact where the nuts touch the wheel will be worn eventually by the harder metal. When you order them, get a soft socket to keep them new looking. Let me know if you have trouble locating them. Good Luck, Michael.

I have heard that at least for track use, you should NOT use steel lug nuts with alloy wheels, something about the 2 different metals not being good. As I recall, this is info from Porsche.
But, its been a while, and I'm not sure, so that could be totally wrong, maybe something to look into, though. |

In 34 years of driving P-cars, I've always been suspicious of the guys with the hard nuts. Mine have always been soft. At the track, I'm always on the look-out for a smooth socket for them -- something that will gently cradle my nuts without scratching or harming them.

Jack,
you can find a soft lug wrench advertised in the Ponorama, Order 2 ,I understand they are delicate. Perhaps you can give one away at the track event. Michael |

Jim T: If steel nuts don't mix with alloy wheels then what about alloy nuts with steel studs? I think this is why anti-sieze was invented. Personally I always thought the alloy nuts were weaker, too easy to strip out. I thought they were alloy to reduce unsprung weigh, same reasoning behind drilled torsion bars. Not a huge weight savings, but every little bit counts.
IMHO for what it's worth. |
