removing rust from a jack

Anyone have ideas on removing light surface rust from a 911 jack? This is from a '71; there are separate mechanisms to lower and raise the jack (don't know if this is similar to newer jacks), and the entire mechanism is exposed, i.e. nothing hidden inside a case.

I had a similar problem with my 72 jack. All I did was get some very light sand paper and a thin bristle brush. Use the brush first, then go over with the sand paper. Buy some POR15 (you can find it in Hemmings) and paint the jack with it. it will come out a very matt black, which is how they came in the first place. Mine looked and functioned as it should.

Look for Naval Jelly at auto parts or hardware stores ,You apply it and let it sit for a few hours and it eats only the rust ,then wash it off

Now, why didn't I think of that.... I am sure that this method would have saved me a ton of time!

Now you tell me!
