6:29 diff gear 915....how strong?
How strong would a 6:29 gear be? Anyone know what these came in front of? I'd have thought a 2.0 if it obviously wasn't for the same years. It's said to be a one year option and one that I haven't heard of yet.
Thats like a 4.88 gear over the more common 3.9 or 4.4 gears. This would make one short box, but for ax or hill climb in a 2.0-2.2 could this be the hot ticket? Or is this the box out of the late 912's, its my hunch?

The 6:29 ring and pinion set was for hill climbs in 901/902/911/904/914 transaxles ... not for 915s!
Check the gear charts I posted in the following thread: 901/13 gear question

My car had a 5-speed with a 6:29 R&P for a few years. It's listed in one of John's charts as a 902/16 gearbox. I happened on it to upgrade the factory-equipped 901-4-speed. It had the following gears: A, GA, O, U and Z
The fifth gear ratio, Z, is the highest available, yet I was buzzing the engine (stock 911T at the time) at 4000 rpm @ 60mph. First gear was a stump puller, good for first/second gear domination over 2 liter Ss. Thereafter, it was no contest ... for them. Sherwood |

But Sherwood, was it a fast buzz to 60?

In reality, more like a fast buzz to 40 mph.

I have used a 6:29 in a gravel rally (901 box) car for some time and it has stood up reasonably well. It does 'clunk' on slow corners at low speed and I guess that this is because it doesn't have enough correction on the pinion teeth to maintain some strength but other than that it has stood up quite well.
